Sofia Vergara looks totally unrecognisable in her latest Netflix role which even saw her take up smoking for the first time ever.
The 51-year-old Colombian-American goddess “re-invented herself” as she gears up for one of her most challenging roles yet. And to play it, she had to ditch her trademark sultry dresses and high heels.
A far cry from her bodacious Modern Family character, Gloria Pritchett, Sofia is taking the lead as Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s Griselda, which is set to hit screens in January 2024. And to play the “Godmother of cocaine”, who ran a huge drug empire in Miami across the 1970s and 1980s, the star needed a more fierce look.

The flawless America’s Got Talent judge had been transformed in newly released images of the show, which showed her war-torn face and chopped locks. In another shot, Sofia could be seen smoking a cigarette while gazing away from the camera.
Director Andrés Baiz said that he admired how she stepped out of her comfort zone to portray the role she had been researching for almost a decade. “This was a chance to reinvent herself and step out of her comfort zone, which was very brave of her,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
As Sofia pushed herself to the limit for the role, she even started smoking, despite claiming to have never picked up a cigarette in her life. “So for example, she had to learn how to smoke. Sofia had never smoked in her life,” Andrés added.
Griselda marks the star’s first role since her shock split with husband, Joe Manganiello, in July after seven years of marriage.
But despite the difficulties of her divorce, armed with her new role, Sofia’s lapping up her single life. “I’ve been well looked after by my friends. I’ve been lucky,” she said, adding that she’s been “to more concerts in the last two months than she has in years”.
