Strictly fans spot ‘winner’ as ‘dark horse’ leaves judges floored on week one

Strictly Come Dancing viewers think they’ve spotted a potential winner as they label Angela Scanlon a “dark horse” in the competition.

The 39-year-old presenter was the second contestant to hit the dance floor on Saturday with her partner Carlos Gu. Dancing the tango the pair put on a mesmerising and dramatic performance.

Strutting her stuff in a gorgeous red gown, Angela and Carlos impressed the judges with their impressive debut. Fans at home were equally as blown away as the judges and took to social media to share their thoughts.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, fans expressed their views. One spectator said: “Very high final potential, I think Angela might even be in the winner potential category tbh.”

Angela Scanlon impressed fans with her first routine

Another impressed viewer wrote: “Yes Angela, can’t wait to see how this partnership develops! Really strong for week 1.” A third wrote: “Loved that from Angela and Carlos. I think she’s going to be fantastic! For week one that was brilliant.”

Meanwhile, another viewer described Angela as a “dark horse”. The fan wrote: “Omg how good was Angela Scanlon? She’s deffo the dark horse imo and it’s only week one.”

Although they also commented on certain aspects of her dance that needed brushing up, all four judges were impressed with Angela and Carlos’ routine. The judges ended up giving Angela a total score of 23.

Fans were loving the star’s routine

Earlier this week, Angela was forced to hit back at critics who suggested that her Irish dancing past might help her in the competition. Discussing the backlash, The One Show presenter noted that her previous routines were solo, while on Strictly she has a partner.

She said: “Most people, you grow up in Ireland, you do Irish dancing. But I’ve never done ballroom, I’ve certainly never done a rumba or any of this style of dancing.

“You dance on your own and it’s very stiff. So the salsa hips, I don’t know how we’re going to achieve that. I have to take into consideration my partner’s limbs and presence – so we’ll see,” she explained.
