Tupac Shakur was murdered in a “gang-related crime” after Orlando Anderson was beaten up, Las Vegas police have said.
The hip-hop legend, who was just 25 at the time of his death, was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996 and he died a week later. The mystery surrounding the musician’s untimely passing is one that has puzzled investigators and fans for over two decades.
During a press conference in Las Vegas on Friday (September 29), it was confirmed that Duane “Keefe D” Davis has been charged with murder. Cops revisited the night of the shooting and played already-released CCTV footage from the night of the incident, which took place after Mike Tyson’s fight at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The clip, taken at around 8.49pm on the night of the murder, shows crowds of people hurrying away from the casino following Tyson’s boxing match against Bruce Seldon after an altercation broke out.
Police Officer Jason Johansson explained that Orlando Anderson, who was the nephew of Davis, and Tupac were involved in a fight in a casino shortly before the rapper’s murder. He then showed a clip from the hotel security camera of Anderson, who died two years after Tupac’s murder, being beaten before Tupac was later shot dead.
Johansson said that this incident ultimately lead to the retaliatory shooting and death of the music icon. He added it “became obvious very quickly” that his murder was a “gang-related crime”. This case had been reviewed multiple times – but it wasn’t until 2018, when new information came to light, that it was “reinvigorated”.
He also mentioned Davis’ “own admissions”, which he provided to numerous media outlets, that he was in the vehicle where the shots were fired from. Davis has previously appeared on multiple TV outlets and written a tell-all memoir outlining his experience on the day Shakur died.
Officials added that Davis is the only living suspect in the case of Tupack’s murder. “All other three suspects are deceased,” police said.
During the conference, Police were asked if the raid of Davis’ house, which happened in July this year, helped to gain more evidence for the investigation. “The evidence obtained after the search warrant in July corroborated the evidence obtained for this indictment,” they said.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson said: “‘Justice delayed is justice denied’ is a quote we used a lot for many many years, but not in this case. Today justice will be served in the murder of Tupac Shakur. He said that Davis, who has just been charged with Shakur’s murder, will appear in court in the next few days or so.
“After working for months on the case, we have decided that there was sufficient evidence to justify for this criminal indictment,” he added. “Tupac Shakur is a music legend and both this community and worldwide have been wanting justice for Tupac. Today we have taken this first step for justice.”
