BBC Breakfast has been covering the new rules around smoking proposed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, with Chris Whitty appearing on the show to discuss them.
The Chief Medical Officer for England came on the show as the “for” argument, shortly after Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt spoke to an “against” supporter. As Mr Whitty joined the show, Naga was firing questions in his direction.

Mr Whitty explained that they want to push a smoke-free generation because many people are addicted to smoking and “wish they’d never taken it up”. He added: “I’ve seen many people desperate to stop smoking because it’s something which is killing them, and yet they cannot and their choice has been removed.”
Naga asked him: “What about those people who already smoke? It’s not going to help them then is it because as you say addiction is so hard to overcome?”
He explained that the Prime Minister is putting forward legislation which would mean children will never legally be able to smoke. Before he could go onto the second point though, Naga started: “Can I just clear this up-“
She was immediately cut off by Mr Whitty who said: “Can I answer your question Naga, because you asked an important question?” Naga simply said: “Yes” while he continued to explain the rest of the rules.
Mr Whitty added that there would be a doubling of the amount of money available to help stop smoking. The decision to get the for and against argument about the proposed smoking legislation came after Rishi Sunak’s conference speech.
After the chat, fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts on Naga’s interview with Whitty. One wrote: “Naga spoiling for a fight with Whitty. He’s just answering her antagonism with cool, common sense. She’s so frustrated.”
Another branded the interview “unnecessarily interrogative”, adding that it appeared she “was trying to catch him out”. While a third said: “Whether you agree with your interviewee or not, they should get a balanced interview like everyone else.”
Naga and Charlie are expected to be back on air on Friday morning.
BBC Breakfast continues daily from 6am.
