Former Strictly star Reverend Richard Coles has revealed that he went into hospital to have spinal surgery.
The popular character appeared in the 15th series of Strictly Come Dancing, but only made it to the second week after being sent packing in the ‘Dance Off’ by TV chef Simon Rimmer.
The priest has now revealed that he’s undergone spinal surgery, but told his followers that everything has gone according to plan. In a positive update, he posted a picture of his hand connected to a cannula, claiming that his hip had been upgraded.

Showcasing his witty sense of humour, even in difficult times, he was able to crack a joke. Making an old-school reference, he said: “Well, I totally get the thing Michael Jackson had for Propofol.”
Keeping his followers in the loop, he continued: “I felt a tad woozy. Next thing I knew, I was in recovery with an upgraded spine (not illustrated), having a lovely dream about dirigibles.”
Upon realising he was in hospital, his followers grew concerned, but were delighted to find out everything was alright. Subsequently, they flocked to his comment section to offer their support.
One fan wrote: “I have a lot of gratitude for scientists and medics who developed anaesthetic, imagine surgery before we had it. Speedy recovery to you x.”
A second fan added: “Didn’t know you were in hospital. Hope you have a speedy recovery,” While a third beamed: “Wishing you all the best, Richard! I heard you were bedridden, and hope you will make a speedy recovery! Hilary sends warm hugs with this!”
Like the Reverend himself, a fan found it in his heart to make light of the situation, saying: “Speedy recovery, Richard. Post anaesthetic dreams are often quite intriguing.”
While the 61-year-old is probably in the best dancing shape of his life, his time on Strictly is likely a thing of the past. However, with Dancing on Ice currently snapping up the biggest names from the world of sport and reality TV, like Ricky Hatton and Amber Davies, someone like Richard, who brings something a little different to the table, might be just what the show is missing.
In general, his fans are starved of content. Earlier this year, he shockingly announced that he was stepping down from his BBC radio show. Sadly, it seems there’s no love lost between himself and the broadcaster, as he claims he feels ‘Frustrated’ and ‘Sad’ with how their relationship came to a close.
