Dolly Parton claimed that she was “scolded” and “whipped” by her religious grandfather for her provocative outfit choices.
The Queen of Country is known for her signature style involving flamboyant outfits, larger than life hairdos and long red fingernails. The 77-year-old once admitted that her dress sense was moulded by a local “town tramp” who was “nothing but trash” in Tennessee – sporting huge high heels, tight skirts, red lipstick and plunging tops.
While Dolly expressed herself through her daring clothing, her preacher grandfather was less than pleased. And she even said that he raised a hand to punish her when she didn’t succumb to his prudish demands.

“I was willing to pay for it,” she told The Guardian. “I’m very sensitive, I didn’t like being disciplined – it hurt my feelings so bad to be scolded or whipped or whatever.”
The 10-time Grammy winner admitted that her outfits have been pretty out there over the years. “I’ve been at this so long, I’ve worn some of the most bizarre things – my hairdos have always been so out there,” she said.
And it wasn’t just her own flesh and blood who were displeased with her fashion choices, the public and even record label executives who had a problem too. Dolly’s critics would tell her “not to look so cheap”, and that “nobody was ever going to take [her] seriously,” she revealed on the Adam Grant Podcast last year.
Despite the backlash from family and strangers, the Jolene singer said that she never let criticism keep her from being her authentic self. “I’ve always been true to myself. That was what my mama always used to say: to thine own self be true. I put a lot of stock in that,” she explained.
