BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent forced to cut interview as war reporter flees to safety

BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent had to cut a cut off an interview following fears for the war reporter’s safety.

The morning show returned for another instalment on Wednesday (October 11) with Sally and Jon Kay back at the helm. The pair were reporting on the Israel and Gaza conflict after Hamas terrorists attacked the country.

Hundreds of people have been killed on both sides and just after 7am, Sally spoke to Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet who was reporting live from Ashkelon, just three miles away from Gaza.

As Lyse discussed what had been happening in the last few hours, after hearing a male voice, she looked to the side of the camera. She said: “Sorry, I think we’re being told…I’m going to keep recording.”

Lyse then moved towards the camera and said: “I think once we can get the camera off here perhaps we can keep reporting, we’re going to move a little bit safe away.” The cameraman tried to steady the camera as they moved away.

Pointing back to the horizon, Lyse said: “We can see the black smoke rising there and we’ve been told there could be some mortars landing in this area so as a precaution so we’re just going to move a little bit away so we’re in a safer area.” She went on: “But I think we’re still safe to keep broadcasting.”

The reporter and the cameraman then continued to walk down the road. Lyse added: “This is what it’s like, it’s a very, very unpredictable situation.” Lyse carried on talking to the camera for another minute. However, Sally was then forced to cut the interview short.

The BBC presenter said: “Lyse, thank you so much for that but we’re going to let you and the crew get to safety as quickly as possible. Thank you very much.”
