Shirley Ballas has said she’s seen a Strictly Come Dancing first with Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola tackling a super tricky step.
The duo wowed the judges and viewers alike with their fiery Paso Doble on Saturday night’s show (21 October), which they performed to the track Insomnia. During Sunday’s (October 22) results programme, Vito explained that they’d done something extra special during their stunning routine.
Head judge Shirley later explained that it was called a “fregolina” and that she had “never seen it before” on the BBC ballroom contest. Chatting to host Claudia Winkleman, she said that it was “fantastic”.

“A fregolina is a step but inside that step, that inside that step the whole thing has 28 steps, from the beginning of the figure, to the completion of the figure,” she said. “It’s one of the most difficult steps to dance, inside the technique book.

“So when you get a step, even like a promenade run or any other step, it’s often not just one step. It could be 10 steps, 20 steps, 30 steps.”
She went on: “And I was very surprised to see that figure, I’ve never seen it before on Strictly Come Dancing. I thought he was very brave to try and teach it and he did it exquisitely well with beautiful footwork.”

Ellie and Vito’s performance went down a storm with Shirley and her fellow judges Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke and Motsi Mabuse. They scored a whopping 37 points out of a possible 40, leaving them towards the top of the leaderboard.
The pair have also become fan favourites, with many people hoping to see them go all the way and lift the covered Glitterball trophy. Many flocked to X, formerly Twitter, after their performance to say how wowed they were.

“So obsessed with Ellie and Vito’s chemistry was not expecting to fall so in love with them,” posted one fan. “Ellie is by far the best isn’t she?!” said someone else.
“Well Vito and Ellie were amazing!” said one viewer. Another agreed: “I simply cannot stop watching Ellie and Vito’s paso doble from last night – absolute fire.”
