Horror film has ‘most disturbing spider scene’ imaginable as fans’ ‘skin crawls’

Arachnophobics, beware – one horror film perfect for the Halloween season has left viewers with their skin crawling after seeing tarantulas creep over a woman’s face.

Classic 1980s horror flick The Beyond comes with a warning: those with a fear of spiders should stay away. Directed by Lucio Fulci, it follows a young woman who inherits an old Louisiana hotel. But shortly after a terrifying series of supernatural accidents, she discovers the old building was constructed on top of one of the gates to Hell.

The film, released in 1981, is the second in the Gates of Hell trilogy, which is also comprised of City of the Living Dead and The House by the Cemetery. The first movie follows a reporter and a psychic struggling to close the gates to the underworld after the suicide of a clergyman caused them to open – allowing the dead to rise.

One scene in the second film would delight creature feature fans and leave anyone with arachnophobia chilled. It sees spiders viciously attack one poor man’s face as he lay frozen in place – helpless to defend himself.

Featuring some speedy running by tarantulas, screeches as the spiders communicate with each other, and the thump of eight hairy feet against wooden floorboards, the scene has left fans petrified. Taking to one forum, one freaked out user penned: “Folks, I have just scene and heard of the scariest/grossest spider scene of all time.

“A shot that shows [a man] lying down unconscious, the background is now focused instead of the forefront and I see two tarantulas slow walking towards him. This is where I turn my head and wait till this scene is over.

“Two mins later and I still hear and ‘see’ – peripheral vision helps me sense movement on the screen, some fast running of the tarantulas and hear a very sickening, and screechy type sound which is no doubt the spiders talking to one another or hissing.

“Those sounds may have been exaggerated since it’s like a bird or some weird non-spider that makes those high pitched squealing and screeching. In any case it’s gross and non-stop.”

Somebody else agreed: “I hate this filmmaker for including such a vile, gross, soul destroying, nightmare inducing scene. Had it been 30 seconds and involved two tarantulas, at least it’s less gross and scary. But nooo, you had to go over two minutes with either 10-12 tarantulas!”

Someone else said: “Oh gosh, those sounds the tarantulas made in The Beyond – the very high pitched squealing (kinda like a baby piglet), is nerve wracking. Knowing WHAT is making those sounds makes it the complete opposite of cute.

“I’m a complete wuss. I looked away when I saw the faraway shot of the tarantulas making their way towards the unconscious man. I can’t imagine anyone with arachnophobia, being able to watch this entire scene or even apart of it. I am not sure if I should continue watching The Beyond after this scene, since I have no way of knowing if I will get a surprise later in the film when more tarantulas rear their ugly, grotesque heads.”
