ITV Coronation Street’s Imran star joins rival BBC show as co-stars rush to support him

Former Coronation Street star Charlie de Melo has landed an exciting new role in the new series of BBC’s Doctor Who.

The actor played Imran Habeeb on the ITV soap, making his debut back in 2017. And it’s fair to say Imran was involved in several big storylines on the cobbles.

However, in 2022, and much to the disappointment of fans, Imran was tragically killed off. Viewers will recall he lost his life in a car crash wife on-screen, and off-screen, girlfriend Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor).

But now a year since his exit, Charlie has bagged a role on the brand new series of BBC series Doctor Who. The soap star confirmed the news on his X, formerly known as Twitter, account.

Alongside a photo of himself, he wrote: “Keeping this quiet has been a minor torture. Very excited to be a cog in this magnificent machine.”

Charlie added: “Two 60th Anniversaries on two titans of British television,” referring to being involved in Corrie’s six-decade celebrations in 2020. He added: “It’s a niche feather in my cap, but I shall wear it with pride.”

Charlie will be playing Charles Banerjee in The Giggle the third of three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials. The episodes will appear on-screens starting this month.

David Tennant is set to reprise his role as the Doctor alongside Catherine Tate. The iconic comedian plays former companion Donna Noble.

But Charlie is not the only former Corrie star joining Doctor Who. Last year, Millie Gibson, who played Kelly Neelan, quit the soap after four years.

She later joined the cast of Doctor Who and will play Ruby Sunday. Ruby is said to be the companion to the new doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.

Fans went wild in the comments section of Charlie’s post, excited to potentially see a Coronation Street reunion. One person said: “Charlie and Millie reunited how exciting congrats.”

However, a Corrie reunion is not likely on the cards. One fan of the iconic show penned: “No, they won’t, he is on the 60th anniversary specials, with David Tennant as the fourteenth doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. Millie is on after them with Ncuti Gatwa.”
