Only Fools and Horses Marlene star loves one word fans shout at her in supermarket

Only Fools and Horses legend Sue Holderness is delighted when people bellow “Marlene” at her when she’s shopping.

And four decades on from the launch of the sitcom, children stop her in the street because their mums and dads have brought them up watching it. Sue, 74, said: “I’m lucky because Only Fools goes on playing and I have young kids come up to me and say they were watching the show last night because their dad told them to.

“When it stopped in 1996 the BBC was bombarded with letters asking where the show was at Christmas. That’s what families would do – settle down to watch the show.” Sue, whose character was wed to car dealer Boycie played by the late John Challis, added: “I hear, ‘Marlene’’said to me in many a supermarket aisle – I love it. Occasionally I see re-run episodes I had forgotten and they’re brilliantly constructed.”

It comes after Sue’s co-star Sir David Jason, who played Del Boy Trotter in the sitcom, provided the update to fans during an appearance on ITV talk show Lorraine.after undergoing a hip operation that forced him to miss a recent Only Fools and Horses convention.

The 83-year old actor first revealed news of his ailment in August as he expressed his disappointment in missing the event in Milton Keynes. Taking to Facebook at the time, the Del Boy actor explained: “I am so very sorry for the disappointment and all the inconvenience it may cause but we are having to change the date of the forthcoming Only Fools and Horses Convention.”

He continued: “Unfortunately, I have just been advised I need a new bionic body part fitted. I won’t tell you which part it is, or you will all want one!” On Sunday (November 12), the former Touch of Frost star clearly appeared to be on the mend, however, as he shared a video of himself throwing his crutches aside before strolling to the theme tune of Rocky.

The veteran later opened up to ITV’s Lorraine Kelly on his progress, which is sure to delight his legion of fans. the Scottish presenter asked: “I have to ask you, how are you feeling because you had your hip operation. We saw the video that went viral when you threw your crutches, are you ok? Are you on the mend?”

He gleefully responded: “Yes! I am on the mend! I am having a little trouble getting the muscles back. Because I was so in firm for two to three weeks and I wasn’t using the legs at all, so that is where I am at now. I am getting it back, I am doing some exercises, but the hip itself is wonderful!”
