Margot Robbie insisted on doing famous scene fully naked despite director’s protests

Margot Robbie insisted on doing her famous Wolf of Wall Street scene fully naked – despite protests from director Martin Scorsese.

The Barbie star got her big break in the 2013 period film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and though she was “apprehensive” about stripping off for her first sex scene, Margot refused to let them be toned down. Director Scorsese offered to “help her out” by removing the need for her to be naked – but Margot said no.

She explained to The Telegraph in 2014 – when she was only 23 – that it’s necessary to strike a balance between nudity for the sake of it and necessary displays. She said: “I think nudity for the sake of nudity is shameful. If they’ve put it in just so that a girl gets her top off, then that’s disgusting. And you can always tell.

“But I also think it’s disgusting when someone would have got naked in real life, in the film they conveniently leave their bra on, or hold up the bed sheet. Seeing someone being choreographed into being covered up irritates me just as much.”

Margot pointed out that “the whole point” of her character Naomi is that she only has her body to use as “currency”. She then added: “So when Marty [Scorsese] was trying to help me out, and said in the scene where she seduces Jordan perhaps I could have a robe on, I said she wouldn’t. She has to be naked. She’s laying her cards on the table.”

Margot confessed in 2018 that the scene took place in a “tiny bedroom” with an all-male crew of 30 people crammed inside. “For 17 hours I’m pretending to be touching myself,” she told Porter magazine. “It’s just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit.”

Margot said she had a “couple of shots of tequila” before the scene to settle her nerves. But she still thought nobody would pay attention to her in the blockbuster hit.

The star received ‘millions of papercuts’ on her bare back

She explained at a British Academy of Film and Television Arts event: “Honestly, I know it sounds silly now, knowing how big the movie became, at the time I thought, ‘No one is going to notice me in this film’. It kind of doesn’t matter what I do in this film because everyone is going to be focused on Leo and everything. And I was just kind of like, ‘I’ll slip under the radar.'”

Margot feared she wasn’t sexy enough for the role – despite soon becoming an international sex symbol. She told Wonderland: “I was terrified that people would see the movie and think, ‘Ugh! She’s not good enough.’ I was very conscious that the script said, ‘The sexiest blonde ever’. Clearly I’m not the sexiest blonde in history.”

To make matters worse, Margot got “a million paper cuts” after romping with Leo’s character in a pile of cash. She confessed to the Daily Beast: “I got a million paper cuts on my back from all that money! It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. If anyone is ever planning on having sex on top of a pile of cash: don’t.”

After performing the scene, Margot got up to grab her robe, only for the crew to gasp loudly. When she asked what was wrong, they explained she looked like “she had been whipped a thousand times.”
