Emma Stone confessed she was “embarrassed” around her Poor Things co-stars but “nothing was off limits”.
She stars as the recently resurrected ‘horny legend’ Bella Baxter in the new film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Bella embarks on a journey of self-discovery after being brought back to life following her suicide, including re-learning all about sex.
Thankfully, Emma’s close bond with her co-stars helped her get over any nerves that were brewing under the surface. She confessed that the rehearsal process in particular helped her get over the initial stress of being overtly sexual on camera.

Opening up with fellow A-lister and close friend Bradley Cooper for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Emma confessed: “That rehearsal process was so helpful because we all got to know each other so well. All you do in a rehearsal with Yorgos is like, mess around.
“You play theatre games, it’s not literal at all – you’re not reading the scenes and working out how they’re going to go. It’s very playful – you’re a human noodle or you’re doing log rolls or whatever. Really fun things where you kind of embarrass yourself.”
Bradley asked her: “Does [director] Yorgos do it with you?” as Emma responded: “Sometimes he does it with you. Sometimes he just laughs through the whole thing.”
She added: “Everybody feels silly and like a troupe. Because of that process… by the time you’re on set for the first day, we’ve already had dinner every night, we’ve already been all over each other in rehearsals and have made fun of each other and been embarrassed.
“So there’s nothing that really feels like it’s off limits when you’re on set because you’re with your friends.” In the subsequent scene that played during the interview, Emma’s character Bella says: “I’ve been a whore, you understand? C**ks for money inside me. Are you okay with that?”
Her co-star Mark Ruffalo, meanwhile, also confessed they had “fun” shooting “outrageous” and “perverse” sex scenes for the movie. He told USA Today: “It’s so comedic and it’s so outrageous and it’s just so perverse”.
Avengers star Mark added: “It’s always a little uncomfortable because you’re like, ‘Is this cool? Do we feel comfortable with this? Are you okay?’ You’re doing that dance.”

While director Yorgos added: “For us to shy away from her when she has no shame or judgement about sex or her body would be disingenuous. It’s just another piece of the human experience.”
Emma says she now “only wants to do things like this”, explaining: “It’s not about what other people expect of you or are looking for from you. It’s about what you want to explore. What’s the point of continuing on this path of being an actor or a creative person if you’re not evolving and doing things that are scary?”
