Brooklyn 99 star Andre Braugher’s cause of death confirmed after tragic death at 61

Brooklyn 99 star Andre Braugher reportedly passed away from lung cancer.

It has been claimed that the star had the illness for a few months prior to his death aged 61 on Monday (December 11.) Andre was best known for his role as the dry-humoured Captain Holt in the US sitcom Brooklyn 99.

He also played the role of Detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide. He won an Emmy for his role in the TV show. He also had roles in the likes of Kojak and Men Of A Certain Age. It is believed he had recently been cast as the male lead in a new Netflix murder mystery set at the White House

Following his tragic passing, his Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star Terry Crews wrote: “Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts.

“You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. My deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.

Melissa Fumero added: “I will remember the deep love and loyalty you had for your family. I will remember it every time I ask work to make time for me to be with my family. I will remember how you sent me pictures of Fall trees in NJ because you knew how much I missed that time of year back east. I will remember you calling me Melly Fumé. I will remember so much. I really thought I’d see you again.”

Andre’s first film role came in the 1989 flick Glory, a historical war drama which also starred Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. He would then move on to television, with Homicide: Life On The Street.

Marc Evan Jackson, who played Braugher’s onscreen husband Kevin, shared a sweet snap of the pair from the set. In a statement to PEOPLE he said that Andre is “a giant, a genius, an artist, a legend, and a force.”

Chelsea Peretti who also starred in the show alongside him said: “Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat. You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep.”
