BBC Antiques Roadshow guest floored as Teletubbies drawings worth eye-watering figure

A guest who appeared on Antiques Roadshow was left gobsmacked after her late husband’s Teletubbies drawings were worth an eye-watering figure.

The re-run of the BBC Christmas special featured a multitude of old treasurable items as presenter Fiona Bruce took viewers through the magical history of toys. But near the end of the show, things took a surprising turn when expert Mark Hill gave an astonishing declaration and told a guest that her late husband’s drawings could be worth £80,000.

Analysing the sketches, Mark looked at the original design drawings and concept art which was created by Jonathan Hills, who sadly died in 2020. The art featured characters Teletubbies characters Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Lala and Po from the popular TV show that first aired in 1997 and quickly became a worldwide success.

Mark said: “We are looking at drawings which look like the Teletubbies but there is a slight difference in some of them. They are original drawings – how on earth did you come to get these?”

The Teletubbies drawings were valued at a huge price

The woman explained that Jonathan was the person who was asked to design some characters for a children’s show. She went on to add that it was his “legacy'”.

Mark said: “Literally hundreds of millions of children saw his work and what we are looking at here is the very start of the Teletubbies.” The woman went on to inform Mark that the original Teletubbies had more of a bear-like appearance and were going to be called Teleteddies.

The guest was stunned when she was told how much the drawings were no worth

The expert then told the guest each drawing could be worth around £1,000, with some valuing even higher at £2,000. But the guest said she had at least 80 drawings – which could give her a potential earning of £80K.

Appearing evidently shocked, the guest said: “Yes, that’s a lot. [Jonathan] would be so thrilled – that’s great.”

Jonathan Hills widow appeared on the BBC show

As well as being the illustrator and caricaturist of Teletubbies Jonathan was also known as a filmmaker and also designed digital images for other TV shows. Jonathan also designed artwork for shows such as Poirot.

Teletubbies was recently rebooted for a 26-episode season on Netflix – complete with a new set and famous narrator. The new format consisted of 26 12-minute episodes.
