AI shows what Fairytale of New York singer Kirsty MacColl would look like at 64

Kirsty MacColl’s death is one of the most tragic in music history.

The Fairytale of New York hitmaker sang alongside The Pogues on the iconic track, while she also had hits with Days and A New England. But on December 18, 2000, tragedy struck while she was holidaying in Mexico with her family.

Now artificial intelligence has revealed for the first time what Kirsty would look like if she had survived that fateful trip. In 2023 she would be 64 years old, and images created for Daily Star by Midjourney AI show her with the same flowing red locks she sported in life.

In one generated image, the star can be seen with streaks of white in her hair, tucked under a delicate black hat. She still wears bright scarlet lipstick, with only a few wrinkles gathering around her eyes and mouth in the snaps.

Another picture shows Kirsty at the recording studio, strumming away at a guitar with huge headphones on. Despite age lines around her eyes and slightly sunken cheeks, she still looks just as good as she did aged 41.

The star was presenting a radio show in Cuba for the BBC just days before she headed to Cozumel in Mexico to spend time with her two sons, Jamie and Louis, and her boyfriend James Knight. Kirsty and her sons decided to go diving at the Chankanaab reef, an area which prohibited boats.

Accompanied by a veteran diving instructor, the group assumed they were safe, but just as they were surfacing from the water, a speed boat entered the restricted area moving at a high speed. In an attempt to rescue her 15-year-old son Jamie, who was in its path, Kirsty managed to push him out of the way and he suffered only minor head and rib injuries.

But the brave move put her in danger, and the boat ran over her. Kirsty was killed instantly, suffering severe injuries to her head and chest.

The boat was controlled by multimillionaire Guillermo Gonzáles Nova, who was on board with his family at the time. An employee, Cen Yam, claimed to be in charge of the boat but was not at the controls when the boat lost control – he was found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to two years and 10 months behind bars.

But instead, he paid around £61 in fines in lieu of his sentence, along with just over $2,000 to MacColl’s family. Claims soon arose that he was paid off to take the blame for the incident for the now deceased Gonzáles Nova.

The Justice for Kirsty Campaign was established after the star’s death to figure out “who really killed her” and continued until 2009, when it was disbanded. Its funds were eventually divided between two charities in Mexico and Cuba.
