Love Actually star totally unrecognisable with blonde hair 20 years after the film

Love Actually’s most hated character, Mia, looks unrecognisable in real life.

Heike Makatsch, whose alter-ego is Mia, resembles nothing of her character in the film. In fact many would most likely question if they even were the same person.

Twenty years on from the film’s release in 2003, the actress who played the office flirt who captivated the attention of Harry (Alan Rickman) will go down in history books as one of the most devastating festive movie scenes. With Harry’s wife Karen (Emma Thompson) left heartbroken.

In the film, Makatsch’s character boasts raven locks with a signature full-bodied fringe and is undeniably beautiful. Fast forward two-decades and the actress is still stunning – now boasting shorter blonde locks and seemingly way less make-up.

For those who are struggling to place Mia, here’s a little recap of what went down in the film. Providing some background as to why she could quite be one of the most hated people in the film.

Mia was involved in “that moment” which has left viewers seething ever since. With Karen, who is played by Emma Thompson, retrieving mass deep sympathies.

In the rom-com, Mia deliberately set’s out to charm the socks off of office boss, Harry. Even going out of her way to nab a dance with him at the Christmas party while his wife watched from the sidelines.

Having caught Harry’s attention, Mia tells him that she doesn’t want something she ‘need[s]’ for Christmas, but instead brazenly request something “pretty” from him. During an outing at Selfridges he picks up an expensive gold heart locket to gift to her.

Ahead of Christmas, Emma Thompson finds the locket and becomes excited thinking that her husband had really gone to some effort to get her something nice this year. Before heading to the annual pantomime, the married-couple agree to open up a gift from each other, however the gift she opens up is a Joni Mitchell CD.

Now, aware that the locket was for someone else she silently goes off to have a little cry, leaving all of us weeping for her. Before putting on a brave face for the children and heading to the production.
