Coronation Street actor Alex Bain has reportedly quit his role as Simon Barlow after 15 years.
The 22-year-old star has played the son of Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) in the ITV soap since he was seven but it has been said that he’s now decided to spread his wings and explore other work away from Weatherfield.
A source told The Sun: “Alex is sad to be leaving Coronation Street because it really is like a family — but he realises that the time is right to move on. He’s very excited about the future and other opportunities.” The publication also stated that Alex will bow out with an “explosive storyline this summer”.

News of Alex’s rumoured departure comes after new pictures showed his character Simon and young Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) filming scenes involving a car accident. An icy patch causes a crash that ends up stirring up secrets many want kept quiet. It’s set to be an emotional Christmas for Simon as his dad Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) makes the decision to leave Weatherfield. Spoilers released by ITV for the Boxing Day episode point to emotional scenes as he and wife Carla Barlow (Alison King) say goodbye as he heads off to pastures new.
Peter has been visibly struggling ever since he killed evil Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) by running him over. With Carla preoccupied with trying to get her factory back on track after Stephen stole her money, the pair have been on a different page for quite some time.
After Christmas, he realises that he has Carla’s blessing to leave but it doesn’t make their parting any easier. As the cobbles’ resident star-crossed lovers, they have quite a history that has been punctuated by their co-dependency, and as they sit down for one final meal together they have to come to terms with a future without each other.

Reflecting on their relationship and its highs and lows, they come to realise that maybe they are better off apart, which makes up Peter’s mind once and for all. In traditional Weatherfield style, he leaves with nothing but a holdall and the clothes on his back but rather than slipping away quietly his whole family shows up to wish him bon voyage.
The only person missing is Simon, who has already said goodbye to his dad several times in his young life. While the rest of the family are sad to see him go they don’t stand in his way and he promises his father Ken (William Roache) that he will keep in touch.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm
