The Twang star shares heartbreak after wife’s death and admits he ‘nearly quit’ group

The Twang’s Jon Watkin has paid tribute to his wife on social media following her death earlier this year.

Jon shared a post on December 27 which featured a picture of his wife and their family as he confirmed she died in April 2023 after a two-year battle with bowel cancer. The family photo featured their three children who he said has been dealing with “huge change and loss”.

He said: “During Sarah’s illness I nearly quit the band several times but Sarah made me promise I wouldn’t. ‘It’s your job and its what you love doing’ is what she would say.

“After Sarah died I was nervous about going out on the road again after not touring for over two years. Full of self doubt leading up to this tour I nearly phoned Phil a couple of time to tell him I was out for good but I made Sarah a promise that I wouldn’t.”

Jon said he’s now thanking her because “she was right”. He added: “This December tour has been one of the best I’ve ever been part of and I’d like to dedicate it to her. But I’d also like to say thanks to you lot, our fans.”

He admitted he’s been dealing with a lot of “darkness and misery” but said the smiling faces on tour is something he will “never forget”.

The star told his followers that without their fans they’re “nothing” and added the support isn’t something he’ll forget. In the statement it was also explained that they’ve been talking about new music coming up.

Tributes immediately poured in from their fans as one user wrote: “Absolute hero mate. Big love to you and the boys.” While another said: “Fantastic band. Look forward to these gigs every year. Sorry for your loss, thank you to Sarah for keeping the music alive.”

A third person wrote: “Thank you for sharing Jon.” While another added: “Keep your chin up, more strength to you.”

They shared the news as they finished their tours for the year, though it looks like they’ll be back at it with some more gigs kicking off in early 2024.
