ITV Benidorm creator confirms return to TV as fans plead for show comeback

The creator of hit ITV sitcom Benidorm has confirmed he is returning to the world of TV, leaving many fans hopeful the show could make a comeback.

Derren Litten was the mastermind behind the show, which focused on the lives of staff and guests of the infamous Solana resort in the Spanish city. Originally running for 10 years, the show garnered millions of viewers, but eventually ratings started to decline and the show was finally cancelled in July 2018.

But despite Litten’s best-known show being the hit sitcom, Litten had also been the brains behind some of the biggest comedy shows of that time. He was also credited for co-writing The Catherine Tate show and also acting in other shows such as French and Saunders and Perfect World.

Following the demise of Benidorm in 2018, Derren went on to develop a British version of the show, titled Scarborough. After one series aired on BBC One, the show was cancelled, and Derren left the world of TV behind as he opened a bar in Benidorm itself.

But in a statement released to his Twitter account, Derren announced he would be returning to his screenwriting role. He wrote: “It’s been a difficult decision but I have decided to return to writing for both television and theatre.

“I have had clear, recent indications that certain TV channels are interested in my decision and I hope you will be watching the fruits of my labour in time to come,” he continued. “Obviously, there are always rumours surrounding such announcements but I would like to make it clear that my decision to come out of retirement is purely to spend less time with my family,” he joked as he finished.

Fans of his work swarmed to his account to wish him well for his new endeavours. But many also pleaded with Derren to bring his hit show back to ITV, as many commended him for his decision.

“Brilliant news! I hope that includes a new series of Benidorm,” one user wrote.

Whilst a second fan begged for more information: “Merry Christmas!!!! You could make my Christmas by saying you’re working on a return for Benidorm. I need Kenneth and Liam,” followed by several love hearts.

A third account fully asked outright for a new series: “Derren please can we have a new series of Benidorm?” However, Derren himself did not respond to the comment.

No specific details regarding shows he is working on have been revealed. Similarly, ITV has not given any new information on whether Benidorm will be returning to our screens.
