James May has teased the potential to work on a new project with his former Top Gear co-hosts amid reports the threesome were due to split after leaving The Grand Tour.
May, 60, had been working with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond for 20 years, when they were first paired together to present BBC show Top Gear in 2003. Since then, the trio have gone on to develop a close working relationship, starring in a number of new shows together.
After Jeremy was fired from the BBC for hitting a producer, May and Hammond followed him, leaving Top Gear behind. With no new project to work on, the threesome were approached to take on the hosting duties for a new show on Amazon Prime in 2016 – The Grand Tour.

But speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Wednesday (December 27), James revealed that they had called time on the show. According to May, the three car fanatics had “filmed the last [episode], for now” and had joked that now he was “technically unemployed”.
He also confessed that he and his fellow co-stars still speak to each other on a regular basis. And he did not rule out working together once again in the future, but admitted they were all “getting on a bit”.
Speaking with Today host Justin Webb, James had said that the trio agreed to call time on their working relationship “with grace and not end up flying into a cliff”.
“We’ve got two [episodes of the Grand Tour] in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see,” he continued. “I suppose that makes me technically unemployed – I can hear the cheers rolling around the country.”
When asked about whether the end of his media career is approaching, James said that choosing to walk away from the show, alongside the cancellation of Top Gear proved “there [was no] better time” for a new show to take their place. May admitted that there would be a lot more content to cover, including the growth in self-driving cars and the changing attitude to driving in general.
The trio officially revealed they would not be returning to The Grand Tour back in May. Stunning fans, streaming platform Amazon Prime Video confirmed the show would still go ahead without the group – despite the original presenters being against the idea of hiring new hosts.
Luckily, before the show bids farewell to Jeremy, Richard and James, two more specials are set to air in the new year. One episode will see the trio take on the desert terrain of Mauritania, whilst the other episode will see the men drive through the savannah plains of Zimbabwe.
The Grand Tour is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
