BBC News presenter’s middle finger blunder used for New Year countdown in cheeky clip

Brits have counted the New Year in with the viral clip of BBC News presenter Maryam Moshir as she counted down on her fingers before being caught ‘flipping the bird’ live on air.

A hilarious clip, shared on X by journalist Scott Bryan, shows crowds of people chanting the countdown to 2024 at The Yard Theatre, London for Knickerbocker’s New Years Eve party. But projected onto the wall behind the DJ was the clip of news reader Maryam Moshir counting down with her fingers.

The video went viral in December 2023 as the penultimate middle finger was caught live on air —prompting the presenter to issue an apology. She explained at the time that she “was a private joke with the team” and that she was “so sorry it went out on air!”

“It was not my intention for this to happen and I’m sorry if I offended or upset anyone,” she added. “I wasn’t ‘flipping the bird’ at viewers or even a person really. It was a silly joke that was meant for a small number of my mates.”

However, Brits have taken it in good humor as UK drag star Fatt Butcher and Knickerbocker host Alex Lawless used the clip to see in the New Year — with many people calling it “iconic”. The video of the NYE party has since gone viral itself with more than 744,000 views.

In the comments, people were seen cheering on the use of the meme as one user wrote: “OMG ICONIC.” Another added: “Book her in for every NYE forever!” A third commented: “Greatest countdown ever.”

Maryam even responded herself simply writing: “OMG!!!” She had earlier joked on the platform that she’d be letting “someone else do the countdown tonight” as Brits plan to see in the New Year on the BBC, Mirror reports.

Alongside an edit of her projected onto the London Eye, Maryam wrote: “I’m letting someone else do the countdown tonight ! I’ll be home with the family .. wishing you all a wonderful New Year. May you all enjoy health and happiness in 2024.”

Her post went down a treat with viewers, with one replying: “Yours is the best countdown.” While another added: “Shame! They should have put you (or “that clip”) on at the crucial time, it would be the perfect way to make us all smile as we see out 2023. Have a very happy New Year and successful 2024.” A third said: “Thank you for my most used meme of the year.”
