Chart-topping noughties boyband unrecognisable two decades after hit single

One of the best-selling bands of the 2000s look completely different as they prepare to celebrate twenty years of hits.

Hoobastank first formed back in 1994, but it was not until ten years later that they first broke through with their smash hit “The Reason”. The four-piece group – made up of lead vocalist Doug Robb, Finnish bassist Marku Lappalainen, drummer Criss Hesse and guitarist Estrin dominated the charts with their songs, with “The Reason” coming to be streamed a billion times.

Now, the group of rocker lads are embarking on a new tour to bring their hits back to their fanbase. But as the fans continue to stream their biggest tracks, they may be shocked to see what they look like now.

The foursome are by no means still active as they continue to release new music twenty years on after finding fame. However, they do not have the same fresh-faced look about them when they first burst onto the charts back in 2004.

Since their debut twenty years ago, Hoobastank has gone on to release seven studio albums, with their last effort being given to the public in 2017. The group are still well-known on the music circuit, and continue to be active, going on a nostalgia tour to reminisce on their biggest hits.

Lead vocalist Doug joked in a recent interview that he already knows what song will be requested most to sing – their breakout track “The Reason”. The band confessed they had no idea how big the song would end up becoming and how it would shoot them to the international stardom they are now accustomed to.

The song has had a rebirth thanks to the track going viral on TikTok. As a result, the song continues to be streamed, surpassing one billion listens on music platforms in recent months, as kids continue to download the track.

Speaking to CNN about how big the band became, Robb admitted on their success: “I don’t think anybody did, to be honest with you, because when we were done recording the songs that we thought were going to be on the album, obviously it was one of them. But it was, in our eyes, the kind of the token mellower or softer song that we had put on a previous album and we had always done even in stuff prior to our record deal.”

When asked about the lyrical content of their biggest hit, Doug added that the song’s text was deeper than what was initially thought. “Lyrically it was written by piecing together a bunch of old lyrics that I had not used and other stream-of-conscious-type writings – and so after 20 years of being asked that question and thinking about it, the song is really about me, I guess.”

Released in 2004, the song first made its mark when it charted at #2 on its first week in the Billboard Hot 100 chart within weeks of its publishing date. Thanks to their success with the track, the band were able to score nominations at the Grammy Awards in 2005 for Best Rock Album and Best Pop Performance by a duo or group.

The band kept going from strength to strength as the group was eventually nominated for the Billboard Music Awards and MTV VMAs. Speaking to the Grammys last year, Doug added that they had kept themselves working hard and that their “self-awareness” is more of a strength than anything.
