Sunday Brunch star Simon Rimmer has announced he’s been forced to close his restaurant after 33 years.
The well-loved chef and telly presenter shared the news in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday(January 2) to announce that his eatery Greens Didsbury will no longer operate after 33 years in business. He admitted it was a “very sad day”.
The vegetarian restaurant opened in 1990 and was loved by celeb fans Zoe Ball and Strictly’s Karen Hauer. Simon, who looked gutted in the clip, explained that spiralling costs and a increase of more than a third in the business’ rent had led to the popular establishment’s demise.

Simon said he was “heartbroken” and had never expected to have to shut up shop. He said: “With great sadness we have had to close the doors on Greens Didsbury for good after 33 fantastic years.
“We can no longer make it work – Our landlord has increased our rent by 35%, that together with increases in power, food and staff costs have made it impossible for us to continue. We’d like to thank every single customer, member of staff, supplier and our friends and neighbours for being part of the journey.”
Simon did say there was light at the end of the tunnel for Manchester fans of the restaurant as its sister restaurant in Sale will remain open. Encouraging followers to visit to support the business he added: “Love thanks and keep terrifying the carnivores. Simon and Simon.” The news devastated diners who were sorry to see the vegetarian restaurant go.
One fan wrote: “So very sad for you all, what a terrible shame.” Another posted: “Such sad news Greens has been one of our favourite places to go for over 10 years since living in Manchester and moving to Didsbury.”
A third user commented: “Oh no, Simon this is so so sad to see.” Greens only celebrated its 33rd birthday three months ago and on its ratings the restaurant had scored an impressive 4.6 out of five stars among its clientele who praised its relaxed atmosphere and “gorgeous” flavours. It also has been nominated in the vegetarian category at the British Food Awards.
At the time of its anniversary, Simon thanked his business partner Simon Connolly for his contribution, writing: “Still proud and love it.” Earlier to this it was reported Simon had ended his involvement with The Scene restaurant in Dubai so that he could concentrate on his UK operations.
