X Factor icon Gamu Nhengu unrecognisable 14 years after ditching fame for regular job

X Factor legend Gamu looks virtually unrecognisable fourteen years on from her stint on the ITV talent show.

The singer was just a teenager when she auditioned for the singing contest back in 2010. The then eighteen-year-old Gamu belted out the lyrics to Walking On Sunshine – and won over viewers straight away.

However, she ended up getting the boot from the show when judge Cheryl controversially gave her the chop. Gamu’s departure from the show rubbed viewers up the wrong way so much, that at the time that it spawned a petition with 250,000 signatures.

The couple live in London and regularly enjoy hikes and travelling abroad. And according to her LinkedIn profile, Gamu is employed by The Chapar, a menswear styling startup, and worked as a stylist at Topshop.

“If you stopped me in the street and asked me if I was ‘Gamu from X factor’ I 99% probably would’ve said ‘no’. And honestly if you do it now it might still be the same…”

She added: “I was young and incredibly naive. Too polite for my own good, never standing up for myself. Never exposing lies that were spread. Instead I just hid away and tried to pretend it wasn’t happening.”
