Shannen Doherty has revealed she’s hoping to live long enough to see the invention of new treatments that could save her life as she opens up about her battle with cancer.
The 90s star, who’s best known for her roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, is currently facing a terminal breast cancer diagnosis, which she revealed last year had spread to her brain and bones. But during the latest episode of her Let’s Be Clear podcast, which she first launched in December, the 52-year-old said she believes if she can survive a few more years then advancements in cancer treatments mean there could be some hope for her.
“I always talk about the fact that we just need to squeeze out another three to five years, and then there’s going to be T-cell therapy or there’s going to be this,” she said. She continued: “There’s going to be a lot more options that will give another five years.

“Then in those five years, there’s a whole other group of options, and eventually there’s going to be a cure.” Shannen’s podcast guest, oncologist Dr Lawrence Piro, used an analogy of horse racing to describe the way cancer patients can navigate the ever-evolving field of cancer research by using one treatment to give them enough time to receive a new treatment, before continuing the process with even newer treatments.
He explained: “I always say that it’s important to think of each therapy as a horse, and in a horse race, you want to ride every horse as long as it rides, and then you ride the next horse as much as possible … you hope you make it a few laps then there’s altogether another new set of horses to ride, to make the race that much longer.”
Shannen agreed with him as she added: “The horse analogy is a really good one. I’m riding those horses so I get to the fresh set of horses, and I’m trying to get the one I’m on right now to last for as long as humanly possible.”
The actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and she went into remission two years later. But in 2019 Shannen received the heartbreaking news that the cancer had returned and was Stage 4.
In June last year, she took to Instagram to announce that the cancer had metastasized to her brain back in January 2023 and that she had undergone surgery to remove a tumor. Then in November, she revealed the cancer had also spread to her bones.
But Shannen remained determined to fight it off. She told People: “I don’t want to die, I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better. I’m just not — I’m not done.”
