Saltburn star ad-libbed horrifying ‘grave-humping’ scene in ‘raciest film of 2023’

One of the raciest scenes in 2023 flick Saltburn was entirely unscripted – and Barry Keoghan came up with it himself. Spoilers ahead!

In the film, Keoghan stars as Oliver Quick, who goes home with his pal Felix Catton for the holidays amid studying at Oxford University. Harbouring a crush – or maybe more – on his classmate, Oliver slurps up some of his semen after a particularly pleasurable bath and… humps his grave.

That’s right, after Oliver’s death, Oliver heads to his newly dug grave, takes off his clothes, and begins dry-humping the dirt. And Barry came up with it mostly on his own, with the help of director Emerald Fennell.

She told Entertainment Weekly: “I spoke to Barry in the morning, and I just said, ‘I don’t know, Barry. I think that he would… unzip.’ And Barry just said, ‘Yup’.”

Keoghan went on to say: “She plants seeds, Emerald, you know what I mean? She knows that they’re going to grow, these seeds, especially when she plants them with me. But it is a testament to Emerald and having that idea and me meeting it with, to be honest, no questions. I was totally on board for it.”

He added: “For me, it wasn’t about f**king the grave, it was more about: I don’t know what to do with this obsession; it’s making me confused and making me un-human in a way. It was a total discovery for him, I think. And it was sad. It was very, very sad.”

He also admitted to Variety that he wanted a closed set for the scene, as he explained: “On paper, he wasn’t written to do that. But I wanted to see what actually happened, where I would take it. I wanted to be confused and let my body lead the way. What am I doing? How can I get closer? It’s trying to find that new level of obsession. Trying to level up on the obsession.”

Barry admitted the bath scene was “disgusting”, telling the publication: “That’s why I made the choice to rub my face along the plug hole and not slurp it straight away — because I’m trying to take it to a new level.”

The racy film has plenty of fans talking – but it hasn’t escaped the notice of celebrities, either. Margot Robbie shared her reaction to the now viral bath scene, after helping to produce the film. She said: “It didn’t feel that shocking in the script, because Emerald immerses you into a world so quickly.

“She’s so masterful at tone and plot. She gets you into it so quickly – you’re just immediately like, ‘I’m in this world’. So by the time you get to something like the bathtub scene, she has primed you for it. She has got you. You’re, like, picking at a scab. You’re like: ‘I can’t help myself’.”

Ulrika Jonsson, meanwhile, said the movie “took her breath away”, telling her Instagram followers: “Saltburn took my breath away, blew my mind. Outstanding cast. Cinematography second-to-none.”
