ITV Corrie original Bethany Platt twins unrecognisable 16 years after exit and quitting fame

Bethany Platt is easily a fan-favourite character on Coronation Street – most famously played by Lucy Fallon.

The actress joined the show in 2015 – and since then, she’s become a hit with viewers. Showing off her acting chops, Lucy has been a word of some of the soap’s most harrowing and memorable storylines playing Bethany.

Lucy ended up leaving the soap in 2020 though – with Sarah Platt’s daughter moving to London to pursue her journalism career. However, last year it was confirmed that Lucy was coming back to Weatherfield.

And in episodes aired last week, the blonde bombshell made her return. And as expected, there’s plenty of drama in store for the rest of the residents on the cobbles.

But before Lucy took on the role of Bethany, the character was first played by young twins called Emily and Amy Walton. The blonde girls took it in turns between 2000 and 2007 to play Bethany.

The twins were involved in some big storylines during their one on Corrie. Fans will recall how Bethany’s grandmother Gail Platt (Helen Worth) married serial killer Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) who drove their family into a canal – in a bid to kill them.

In 2007 though, the character left the soap when Sarah, played by Tina O’Brien, moved abroad to Italy with Bethany. And when Bethany returned in eight years later – Lucy was recast as her instead.

Lancashire-born Emily and Amy Walton, who are now 23-years-old were born on 15 March 2000. The two have turned their backs on acting and showbiz and no longer have that career.

Lucy Fallon almost missed out on the role of Bethany at first though. She was called in last minute after an older actress called Katie Redford lied about her age.

Katie was originally cast as Bethany and claimed she was 19 – but she was actually 25. Bosses ended up finding out – with Lucy called in to take on the role.

Talking about the “very easy” decision to head back to Corrie and play Bethany, Lucy said in December: “It was a huge decision for me to leave.”

She added: “The whole time I’ve been gone, I’ve been in contact [with] everybody still – I love everyone and I love the job. It’s the best decision I could have made to go back, so it was a very easy decision.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm
