Coronation Street’s Ciarán Griffiths has revealed the hilarious response he has to vile hecklers over playing a gay character.
The actor, 40, made his cobbles debut in 2022 playing the role of bad boy Damon Hay. And it’s fair to say he’s already been a part of plenty of drama in Weatherfield.
Fans will recall how Damon ended Sarah Barlow (Tina O’Brien) and Adam’s marriage by sleeping with Sarah and getting her pregnant. And after his return last week, he had Adam snatched off the cobbles and held hostage.

Fortunately, Damon never went ahead with his original plan of killing Adam (Sam Robertson) and let him go. However, more drama is no doubt to come.
Prior to his stint on Corrie, Ciarán had an impressive career. The TV star has appeared in numerous soaps and television series such as City Road, The Bill, Holby City, Waterloo Road, and EastEnders.
But Ciarán is perhaps best known for playing gay gangster Mickey Maguire in the comedy-drama Shameless. He starred in the Channel 4 show from 2007 to 2012.
Troublemaker Micky was often seen being violent, aggressive and mean. His character had a pivotal role in the series when he was seen trying to come to terms with his sexuality as a secretly gay man.
Despite the ground-breaking role, Ciarán playing Micky led to some unfortunate heckling from trolls. Ciarán, who is straight in real life, said he is regularly heckled and mocked for playing a gay bad boy on the show.
Ciarán claimed that it’s boozed-up lads often trying to pick fights with him. He also said it even prevents him from chatting to girls when he’s out on the town with his mates.
He revealed: “It’s usually a bunch of drunk lads. They know I am not gay and then one lad will say, ‘I have to ask this question’ and he’ll get all his mates’ attention and say, ‘Are you gay?’”

And Ciarán had an epic response to them. He revealed: “They all fall about laughing but I generally reply, ‘Ask your dad!’ I did that once and ended up having to leave the club.”
Ciarán admitted even potential girlfriends ask him, but it hasn’t affected his success in that department. He said: “I don’t mind it when girls ask the question and I do all right for girlfriends.”
One run-in in particular was when he was confronted by some builders in his local area. He shared: “I once had a run-in with a few builders who were working near me. They asked if I was the guy off Shameless and when I said yes they started up, ‘The gay one, the gay one’.
“They were all from Liverpool and giving me stick. I was going to go back and sort them out but thought better of it,” he added.
