Love Island’s Jake Cornish and Liberty Poole coupled up on day on during the 2021 series of the show.
Liberty quickly fell head over heels for Jake, but fans struggled to get convinced that he was feeling the same things as her. A few things ultimately came to the surface with Jake and Liberty, and she started to doubt her boyfriend towards the end.
In a completely shocking twist, Jake and Liberty decided to leave the villa of their own accord prior to the final which saw Millie Court and Liam Reardon take home the crown.

Liberty quickly became very popular outside of Love Island after prioritising herself and focusing on self-love, and now she’s heading back into the villa to try and find a relationship once more. But in a shocking twist, Jake will also be in there with her.
With a mixed collection of former islanders, there’s bound to be drama at every corner, but with two exes in the villa, it’s going to start strong.
So as tensions are inevitably set to rise, we’ve looked back at what exactly happened with the pair, and why things could take an awkward turn.
Ofcom row
Movie Night made its debut in 2021, and it well and truly went out with a bang. Jake was exposed for egging the lads on to get to know the new girls, but that wasn’t all that sparked fury.
Liberty watched Jake – who had recently become her boyfriend – talking about her to the lads in week one. He was seen saying: “The biggest thing is the personality. Her personality is mint, I can’t fault it.
“There’s not that 100% where I look at her and go… I haven’t got that girl there where I’m like ‘f**k, I want to rip your clothes off’. I don’t want to fake any s**t, you know what I mean?
“I wanna be here thinking, ‘I really do like her’ when really I’m lying to myself.'” Liberty pulled Jake for a chat soon after and a teary-eyed Lib told him how much the comments hurt her.
‘Playing up to the cameras’
One major red flag for Liberty was when her bestie Kaz was asked to be Tyler’s girlfriend and she wanted to run over and congratulate her pal with everyone else. But Jake pulled her away and urged her to stay with him and wait for Kaz to come over.
Jake told her: “You don’t want to be up there with all them”. He wanted the four of them to have their own moment to be excited for each other away from the fellow islanders.
Later in bed, Liberty told Jake she wasn’t happy with what had happened, saying: “I know you say sometimes, like, ‘We are on a TV show’, but at the same time, what makes it good is just you being yourself, do you know what I mean?
“Tonight, me wanting to run up and hug Kaz as soon as she came down the stairs was a natural reaction to me.” Jake responded: “Oh my God, serious? I just thought it’d be nice for you to have your own alone time with Kaz, not with everyone there.”
Dropping the L-bomb
Liberty wasn’t the only one who started doubting Jake during her time in the villa. When a thrilled Liberty pulled the girls over to tell them that Jake had told her that he loved her.
Speaking to all the girls, she said: “You girls are gonna be so proud of me, I literally went upstairs and I was like I’m taking no s**t and I stood my ground. There was a lot of deflection going on at first and I was like ‘Just say to me how you feel’.”
Her friends praised her for it, but then when she confirmed that Jake dropped the L-bomb, her pals faces dropped. They asked if she thought he had been telling her what she wanted to hear, which prompted Liberty to second-guess it.
Quitting show
Jake and Liberty then quit Love Island three days before the final after questioning their relationship. A source said at the time: “It was a really tough decision for the couple to make, but it felt like the right thing to do.
“They’d given it their all on camera and wanted to let their friends in other couples have a chance at winning.” The pair had split after they’d rowed over her being messy and a selfie they’d taken.
She told her pal Faye Winter that she could tell she was “giving him the ick” and wanted to leave being herself.
Secret reunion
Jake had claimed that he and Liberty gave things another go after splitting on the show. He previously told The Sun that after they came out of the villa they had decided to give it another try and were talking again.
However, Jake said they soon agreed they were not right for each other. He said he’d sent her a text after she was announced as a Dancing on Ice contestant and she thanked him – and that was the last they’d spoken.
