James May compared watching the rebooted series of Top Gear to “watching your mum and dad have sex” as BBC show gets shelved.
The 54-year-old car fanatic may not be in the driving sear anymore, but the former host confessed that he still kept tabs on how his successors Matt LeBlanc, Rory Reid and Chris Harris got on. Speaking at The Grand Tour Series 2 launch in the heart of West London, the 54-year-old shared his thoughts on the show since the presenters took over the presenting gig in 2016.
He said: “I was watching Top Gear long before I was on it and will continue to watch it long after I’m not on it anymore. I was just on temporary custodian of it.”

But the TV presenter was able to call out his and his co-star Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson’s own faults when they presented the show in the 2000s. James confessed that some of their worst habits on set included sloppy driving and regularly reading scripts while behind the wheel.
He admitted: “A bad habit we all have is looking at notes and scripts while we are driving along. Somewhere, in the archives, there are hours and hours of us driving along and just checking our facts and figures before we say them. It’s terrifying when you realise you’re doing it.”
It comes after James left the car door open for a reunion with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond after they shelved their Prime Video series The Grand Tour for a final time. During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, he responded to a question about the future of the series.
He told listeners: “Well, we’ve filmed the last one for now. I suppose that makes me technically unemployed – I can hear the cheers rolling around the country.
“We’ve got two in the bag, though, so there’s one coming out very soon. I’m not what I’m allowed to say here. Then [there is] another one coming out a bit after that.” Last year, Clarkson told The Times that the trio were “done” after 34 years of show.
However Prime Video is yet to officially cancel The Grand Tour, which is among its highest-rating original series. When asked if the trio would come together for another project in the future following their success with The Grand Tour and Top Gear, he said: “I wouldn’t rule it out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re getting on a it.
“I have been doing it for 20 years plus and don’t think any of us ever thought it would last that long.” The comments come following the BBC’s decision to “rest” Top Gear for the “foreseeable future”.
