Coronation Street fans gobsmacked at ‘daylight robbery prices’ on ITV soap

Coronation Street fans were utterly stunned at the “daylight robbery” prices of food inside Dev Alahan’s corner shop.

During Friday’s (January 12) visit to the ITV soap, fans caught up with the businessman as he celebrated his twins Aadi and Asha’s 19th birthday with a bang. For their big day, the doting dad took the important day off work to cook a lavish feast for the pair.

But their big day didn’t go quite to plan when Aadi and Asha’s girlfriend Nina Lucas admitted that they shared a kiss the night before their birthday. And things soon went from bad to worse when Aadi was rushed to hospital after he suffered carbon monoxide poisoning inside his flat just hours later.

While Dev was desperately trying to pick up the pieces, Evelyn Plummer was holding down the fort in the corner shop. But even she couldn’t avoid conflict when she bumped into her daughter Cassie who was waving around a load of cash which she claimed was due to her son Tyrone Dobbs giving her a pay rise.

When Evelyn found out that she was lying, she quickly put two and two together and worked out that her daughter had assaulted illegal puppy breeder Terry and stole an eye-watering amount of money in the process. At the time, Evelyn was arrested for the assault after a passer-by spotted them fighting over a camcorder.

But the beloved star was cleared of all crimes just hours later when a neighbour clarified that she never entered the property. However, fans were more shocked by the eye-watering prices inside the popular corner shop.

When Evelyn confronted her daughter about the robbery, eagle-eyed fans spotted that a bag of Jelly Babies were on sale for £3. It didn’t tale long before viewers took to the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their surprise online.

A third cheekily quipped: “More interest on #Twitter in the price of Jelly babies than the storyline #Corrie.” Another joked: “£3 for a bag of Jelly Babies? Has Dev got Carbon Monoxide poisoning? #Corrie.”

A fifth echoed: “THREE QUID FOR A BAG OF JELLY BABIES?! #Corrie.” Meanwhile another agreed: “Hold up. £3 for Jelly Babies in D & S Alahan Corner shop? Won’t be shopping in there any time soon #corrie.”

It comes after soap fans called out ITV bosses after spotting an obvious blunder as the twins celebrated their birthday on the cobbles. Loyal fans will remember Dev and his wife Sunita welcomed the twins back in 2006, but they have had their fair share of struggles along the way.

Just years later, their mum died in harrowing scenes at the hands of her ex-lover Karl Munro in a terrible fire at the Rovers Return. After the hour-long episode hit the airwaves, the official account for the ITV soap shared a throwback snap of them being born.

They captioned it: “The Alahan twins turn 10 this week! Who remembers back to when they were born?” Confused viewers immediately flooded to the social media to point out that the twins would be 18 not 19 on the soap.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV1 from 8pm or catch up on ITVX.
