You can take Ricky Hatton out of boxing, but you can’t take boxing out of Ricky Hatton.
The ring legend made his much-anticipated Dancing On Ice debut on Sunday evening as the ITV celebrity showcase got underway. But it was one highlight moment outside the judges’ scoring that had spectators in stitches.
That’s after The Hitman sent host Stephen Mulhern sprawling with a well-placed left jab between performances. And the exchange left the onlooking Holly Willoughby gasping, while her co-presenter looked to recover from being hit by a former two-weight world champion.

Hatton, 45, has been partnered with Cirque du Soleil ice show performer Robin Johnstone as he seeks to put his twinkling toes to good use. However, things didn’t go entirely to plan after he was relegated to the skate-off, which will take place on next Sunday’s show.
As is only right, the former prince of pugilism used a boxing reference for his opening display, taking inspiration from Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky films. And Bill Conti’s ‘Gonna Fly Now’ acted acted as the soundtrack as he and Johnstone strutted their stuff.

If Hatton was at all frustrated with their scorecards, Mulhern’s insistence on him holding up a boxing announcer’s mic won’t have helped. And Willoughby could only stare at the camera after he reacted by pounding the presenter in the arm.
“Script probably says ‘Ricky Hatton gives Stephen Mulhern a gentle push,'” wrote one fan in a hilarious response. Another social media user laughed: “Not Ricky Hatton actually punching Stephen Mulhern.”

This is one challenge Hatton won’t be able to punch his way out of, however, as his skates will need to do the talking from now on. And that may prove problematic if his debut performance is anything to go by.
