Dancing on Ice’s Greg Rutherford convinced ‘hip was broken’ after horror fall

Dancing On Ice star Greg Rutherford MBE revealed he’d suffered a brutal fall on the ice during his debut skate.

The frightful incident, left the Olympic track and field athlete believing he’d “broken his hip” along with a nasty egg-style lump that sprang up on his head soon after the ordeal. But the British long jumper wanted it to be known that only he was only at blame.

At the time of the ice accident, Grey had been racing a number or his co-stars on day one. With many of them getting a little “excitable” as the competition heated up.

Wanting to showcase his skating skills and pick up speed to win the race, the father-of-three took to his toe picks and begand to sprint across the ice. Which ended in disaster for the medal winner.

Speaking to Daily Star at the ITV roundtable sessions, Greg told us: “I knew I’d have an injury at some point but it had to be day one didn’t it. We were all having a great time on the ice and a little bit overly excitable (well I did in particular) and thought we’d have a race.”

He explained: “Rather than skate I just sprinted on my toe picks and then got a little bit too quick for my legs and then just hit the deck like no tomorrow. I’ll be totally honest, I thought I’d broken my hip. “

Greg went on: “It was such a heavy impact. I think it’s going to be shown on the first show. I had this massive egg form on my head.” He also added that a specialist on the show did examine the lump on his head after it had appeared to be a bit abnormal but was given the all clear and it did heal up eventually.

According to the Olympian, fans can expect to see the brutal fall in action, with it being aired on the first show of 2024 on Sunday 14 January. Viewers can also expect to see some drastic changes this year as usual host Holly Willoughby takes centre stage alongside Stephen Mulhern.

There had been much speculation about who step into the presenting role after Willoughby said an emotional goodbye to This Morning after 14 years with the show – this after it was reported she’d been the target of a frightening alleged kidnap and murder plot.

Moving on from the terrifying ordeal, she has been confirmed to be joining Mulhern in what is set to be the first series since her longtime co-host Phillip Schofield stepped down.

Dancing On Ice will air on Sunday, January 14 on ITV1 and ITVX
