Star Trek fans are only just realising how iconic ‘Beam Me Up’ catchphrase became famous

“Beam me up, Scotty” has become one of the best known catchphrases to emerge from Star Trek.

The common quote made it’s way into popular culture from the 60s sci-fi, and became so well-known it has persisted for generations.

But there’s a twist behind it. Captain Kirk never uttered it. Not once did Kirk actor William Shatner yell those four words in that order into his communication device when he needed ferrying away from a gang of grumpy green goblins during a problematic planet visit.

That’s not to say a quick reshuffle of the words didn’t come out in the show. In fact, variants of the line spoken to the chief engineer included “beam me up”, “Mr Scott, beam us up,” and the oh-so-close “Beam us up, Scotty.”

But nearly 60 years on, the erroneous misquote remains the winner and has evolved a life of its own.

William Shatner never once said ‘beam me up, Scotty’

In the obituary of Scotty actor, James Doohan, he was misquoted as the character who “responded to the command, ‘beam me up, Scotty’.”

Beyond the show, the phrase has been used as slang for certain drugs as well as in numerous television shows, movies, video games, songs, and speeches.

The quote was used in the 1998 movie Armageddon by Rockhound, the character played by Steve Buscemi.

When asked by Harry S. Stamper (played by Bruce Willis) if Rockhound would join them to divert the asteroid, he replies “You know me. Beam me up, Scotty”

Even American rapper Nicky Minaj used the quote as the title of, as well as the name of a track, on her third mixtape.

A longer version of the, “Beam me up, Scotty, there’s no intelligent life on this planet” became a popular quote for both Trekkies and non-Trekkies to display on bumper stickers and t-shirts.

Other popular Star Trek quotes, such as “Live long and prosper” and “Resistance is futile” simply have not had the same cultural impact as “Beam me up, Scotty.”
