Home and Away’s Lynne McGranger receives X-rated messages from fans with ‘mother complex’

Lynne McGranger is one of Home and Away’s biggest stars, having been a regular on the soap for more than 30 years.

Making her debut as the feisty Irene Roberts in 1993, Lynne is now the longest serving female cast member of a television soap opera in Australia. Throughout her career, the actress revealed she often received X-rated messages from her male fans.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star in 2019, the 70-year-old admitted the introduction of social media made it easier for fans to contact her. She said: “With social media people can contact you directly and some of the messages do surprise me. Some of them are weird.

“I have young male followers who can be a little bit flirty and a little bit weird sometimes. I think they’re all young men who obviously have a mother complex.”

The soap star added: “As long as you can recognise it for what it is, then it’s fine. It’s just a bit of fun. It’s nice my character invokes feelings in people.” Lynne went on to admit that she also receives “lovely” messages from fans who feel like they can open up to her.

“I also get a lot of gay men who come out to me. That happens in person and online,” she said. “It’s lovely. They feel like they can trust me and know I’m not going to judge them.”

Lynne touched upon the important role Home and Away plays in people’s lives, but confessed she gets called Irene more than her own name. She said: “ Home And Away is part of people’s lives. It has been for more than 30 years.

“People have grown up with it. And it’s a joy to be part of that. I get called Irene more than I get called my own name. I do wonder how long I’ll have to be on TV before people realise my name is Lynne.”

This means that the soap icon gets recognised wherever she goes. “A bunch of Aussies accosted me in Times Square once, which was bizarre,” she revealed. “I thought I’d be safe in America, but I wasn’t. I’m always getting recognised by Brits, Irish, Scots and Welsh, of course. But it also happens with Belgians, Norwegians and Estonians.

Lynne went on: “Those countries all love Home And Away for some reason. Next time I go to Oslo I’ll have to wear a wig.” Despite passing three decades on the soap, Lynne is still at the centre of the action. She is currently facing up to seven years in prison for harbouring former fugitive Dana Matheson (Ally Harris) in her home.
