I’m A Celeb’s Tony Blackburn opens up on scary ghost visit and ‘awful’ world leaders

Broadcast legend Tony Blackburn has revealed he was visited twice by a ghost as a teenager.

But despite the spooky experience the first I’m A Celebrity winner is more frightened of “awful” male tyrannical leaders like despot Putin and is calling for women to take over running the world. Tony said: “When I was about 17 years old, I lived in Poole in Dorset. I was in bed and saw this thing hovering above my bed, like a face.

“I didn’t recognise it but I looked at it and it gradually faded. I thought it was weird, and the following day it happened as well – the same thing! It’s never happened since but it was hovering about two feet in front of me.

“I thought, ‘That’s a bit scary’ so the following day I left the door open. It didn’t go out, it just faded.”

Questioning if there is a higher power making decisions for us, Tony remains unconvinced because of all the suffering in the world right now including the wars in Ukraine and Palestine and the cost-of-living crisis. He said: “I’m not religious in any way.

“I’d love to think there’s something after this but I’m not convinced. The reason is because religion is responsible for a lot of things that happen in the world.

“If there was something up there that looked down on us, why doesn’t it come down and help out a bit? If I was God, I might pop down and stop it – it’s dreadful. Men fight, you can’t stop it.”

Instead of Israeli PM Netanyahu and North Korea dictator Kim Jong-un, Tony, who turns 81 next Monday, reckons we need a change of sexes at the top. He said: “It’s time women had a go at ruling the world in every country – experiment for a year at least, and I think it would be a lot better and safer.

“You see all these men and testosterone floating around. There are some horrible women around but the majority would think a bit more before going into war – it might be a safer place to be. Men have had it all their own way all these years and messed the whole thing up – men are awful, I’ve always thought that.

“I know it’s a very simplistic way of looking at it but we’re not here for long, it would be nice to just enjoy ourselves and have a bit more fun. Your health is important, so many people are struggling to pay bills… It’s a horrible world at the moment and I wish it would stop.”

Last year Radio Two presenter Tony, who takes his Sounds Of The 60s show out on live tours, battled sepsis and pneumonia. In December he stepped down from hosting his BBC Radio London show.

He said: “I was in hospital with sepsis and it was a shock. I was overdoing it so I’ve cut down to one theatre show a week.”

Radio veteran Tony, who received an OBE in the 2024 New Year Honours list, is working with the Gas Safe Register to help the nation’s grandparents – and entire families – get clued up. Speaking openly, he shard: “I’ve got two grandchildren and nowadays grandparents are looking after children because childcare is so expensive.”

“It’s really important to make sure the gas boiler is working OK, do it in September as some people wait until winter when it’s broken down. I get mine serviced every year because it can be dangerous.

“I love Coronation Street and they have a story on there right now with a guy passing out through breathing in carbon monoxide. It’s really worth making sure it’s all checked out.” To find a Gas Safe registered engineer, and for further gas safety tips this winter, visit gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.
