Cher denied conservatorship over son Elijah despite addiction fears

Pop icon Cher has been denied a temporary conservatorship over her adult son, Elijah Allman, despite her fears over his addiction and “schizoaffective disorder”.

Cher, 77, told courts via a video link that she felt conservatorship would be the best solution after her lawyer, Gabrielle Vidal, detailed 47-year-old Allman’s apparent problems. Ms Vidal explained that beyond addiction, Allman also has “a secondary issue in that he suffers from schizoaffective disorder that leads to periods of psychosis”.

Ms Vidal claimed that Believe singer Cher has been left “terrified” that Allman is no longer under the care of medical professionals having been hospitalised on multiple occasions in 2023. Judge Jessica Uzcategui, however, said Allman – who was present in person at the hearing – remained capable of managing his own affairs.

Instead, a third hearing over a possible conservatorship has been scheduled for March 6. Cher previously saw a case thrown out on December 27, citing her son’s “ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues”.

According to Rolling Stone, Judge Uzcategui said on Monday: “I don’t question the motivation behind Cher’s request as having been driven by concern for her son. And I understand the perhaps overlapping issues with respect to substance abuse and mental health that have affected the proposed conservatee in the past.

“I don’t think he questions that either. I see a lot of acknowledgment of that in some of the paperwork. But concerns are not sufficient evidence.”

Allman was accompanied by his previously estranged wife Marieangela King to both hearings, with his licensed therapist attending the most recent too. In a filing last week, Allman claimed he had tested negative for drugs and alcohol in voluntary tests, and was living with King in a new residence following their reconciliation.

He told the hearing he was also in the process of hiring a business manager to manage his financial affairs. “In the two weeks since the initial hearing, I have been successfully managing my income and expenses and have refrained from the use of illicit substances that have historically caused the incidents that have given rise to my mother’s concern,” he said.

He continued: “I am doing well and do not need the help that my mother is offering. There was no emergency giving rise to a conservatorship at the last hearing, and there is certainly none now.”

Court documents in December stated that Cher “worked tirelessly” to get her son the “help he needs”, and claimed his wife King shouldn’t act as conservator, alleging she is “not supportive of Elijah’s recovery” and “actively works to keep Elijah from getting clean and sober or receiving mental health treatment that he desperately needs”.

The pair filed for divorce in 2021, but in December 2022 King claimed they were working towards a reconciliation. In 2023, they were officially “estranged”, with Marieangela alleging Cher was “interfering” with Allman’s “health management as well as his location and accessibility” during a period in which the pair were attempting to “work on their marriage”.
