Harry Potter actor Ekow Quartey has landed a new theatre part and looks totally different to his days in the franchise about the boy wizard.
The actor was a child star when he joined the likes of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) and Emma Watson (Hermione) at Hogwarts. But now he’s all grown up at 33, and has just bagged a role in a Shakespeare play where he is completely unrecognisable from his Potter days.
Ekow is best known for The Prisoner Of Azkaban, which was released in 2004. While the name of his schoolboy character wasn’t known, he had a big scene where he warned Harry about Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), telling him: “It’s like trying to catch smoke, like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands.”

He also dished out another warning about an “omen of death”, leading some fans of the series to refer to him as the “Bad News” boy, or “Bad News Bem”, because of his sinister messages.

Ekow has been cast as Benedick in the National Theatre’s production of Much Ado About Nothing – and has totally transformed since he was a little boy in a black and maroon robe. News of his latest role was shared on TikTok, along with a joke about the actor’s Potter part.
The clip showed Ekow in costume for his part in the Shakespeare play. And the caption said: “What if you never said, ‘It’s like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands?'”

The actor has plenty of acting credits under his belt since he was at Hogwarts 20 years ago, having been in TV series such as Smothered, Porters, Zapped, Breeders, Becoming Elizabeth and Call The Midwife. He has also been on the stage in other productions and has been in short films such as The Complete Walk: Titus Andronicus and a television film called The Proposal.

Ekow regularly shares career updates on Instagram, and although he looks totally different some fans do recognise him from Potter. “BEM YOU ARE SO GROWN UP!” one posted after he shared a recent shot from Becoming Elizabeth.
Another asked: “Wait are you in Harry Potter or what? I swear I just saw you!” “I still use that ‘catching smoke with bare hands’ line,” said someone else.
