Toni Collette said she worked hard to ensure the sex scenes in her BBC miniseries Wanderlust were “real”.
As the self-proclaimed ‘first woman to orgasm’ on BBC One, Toni didn’t hold back in describing just how those simulated scenes went down. Though she was initially nervous about stripping off, she confessed: “t’s a part of life. It’s a very lifelike show. It’s nice for it be out in the open. I mean, Jesus. I think I got quite used to it!
“You can’t half halfheartedly act sexual scenes, you have to make it feel real, because you can tell when you’re watching something if it’s not energetic. So, I was nervous at first but it’s such a part of Joy and Alan trying to find a way of making their relationship sustainable and I guess the more steeped I was in the story the easier it became, to be honest.”

She added that by the end of filming she had “no concerns” about her raunchy scenes. And her co-star Steven Mackintosh was just as into the filming, confessing it wasn’t like any sex scenes he’s seen on TV before.
He explained: “I think with sex on TV, when I watch something, sometimes I’m taken out of the story and I feel like I’m suddenly watching two actors in an explicit scene rather than characters.
“I feel with this, it’s so intrinsically part of it and the way Nick writes the awkwardness, the fumbling, the moments in between, that’s what takes the curse out of all of that. It’s really rooted in these people trying to figure things out, and that feels completely real for me.”
Toni said in 2018 that she’d made history as the “first woman to orgasm on the BBC” while playing Joy Richards in the six-part drama. The Australian actress gushed: “Someone told me I was the first woman to have an orgasm on the BBC. And I’m happy to take the accolade.”
But she feels uncomfortable with the introduction of intimacy coordinators to set, explaining that she felt so “at ease” with her co-stars she asked the sexpert to leave set of The Power last year. She told The Times: “I think it’s only been a couple of times where they’ve been brought in, and I have very much trusted and felt at ease with the people I was working with.
“It just felt like those people who were brought in to make me feel more at ease were actually making me feel more anxious. They weren’t helping, so I asked them to leave.”

Asked whether she would have appreciated them more at the beginning of her career, she revealed: “Look, every job is different. Because it’s a bunch of new people it’s a new energy; everyone brings their whole life with them, and it’s all thrown in the pot. You never know what you’re going to get and it’s a miracle that a film ever comes together, let alone thrives.
“I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve only worked with a few a***holes over the several decades that I’ve managed to keep this boat afloat.”
