British actress Sophie Rundle, known for her roles in Peaky Blinders and Gentleman Jack, has spoken out about the importance of intimacy coordinators on film and TV sets.
“Putting in intimacy coordinators as an element of safeguarding is really important,” she said on the Radio Times Podcast. She added: “Having someone assigned to oversee the process is vital because it allows for a neutral third party and anonymity if you feel uncomfortable.”
She also clarified that actresses are not against sex scenes but want them to be handled better. “Women are allowed to be sexual. We’re not saying no more sex scenes,” she explained.

“Can we do them in a way that isn’t just titillating for someone else to watch? There are more interesting ways of exploring that narrative than just boobs.”
Rundle praised Ita O’Brien, an intimacy coordinator on Gentleman Jack, for her work. The actress also discussed the #MeToo movement’s impact on the industry, noting that while progress has been made, there’s still a long way to go, especially when it comes to casting older actresses.
“I’m a mother and I’m 35 but I’ve been playing mothers since I was 23. With my 23-year-old body that had never had a kid, while holding a baby in my arms. That’s got to start changing.” she concluded.
Now, Sophie does have experience as a mother though. She is engaged to actor Matt Stokoe after they met on the set of Jamestown, and welcomed a son together in 2021.
Matthew is also known for roles in Black Mirror, Misfits and Bodyguard, in which Sophie starred too. Most recently, he played Raoul Moat in the ITV docu-drama.
