BBC Breakfast’s Charlie Stayt says ‘no one wants to see that’ after guest’s request

Charlie Stayt has blasted a challenge set for him by one of his guests on BBC Breakfast.

Stayt, 61, returned to our screens on Friday (February 9) to host the BBC morning show, alongside Naga Munchetty. During the show, the hosting duo had the pleasure of having 90s pop icons Steps join them on the sofa.

Each sporting a blue outfit, the group joined Charlie and Naga to talk about their upcoming musical. The stage show, which kicks off at the Alexandra Palace in Birmingham later this year, features some of the band’s biggest hits in a tribute to their music – similar to the style of Mamma Mia.

Speaking about their music coming to life, the band were ecstatic about the project finally coming together, ahead of the release of tickets later in the day. When asked about what the show is about, band member Claire Richards said: “You will see a story about love and friendship, about four friends embarking on a summer of love – and it’s all set to our music!”

As the interview progressed, the group discussed what it was like having their music involved in such a big production. Ian ‘H’ Watkins admitted that they were “super excited” for everyone to see the show following a run-through of the show with the actors.

The band revealed they had the idea of developing an musical for their music for over a decade, but needed to wait until they found the right writers to work on it. “I think we were really overwhelmed and happy and proud of how it’s come together,” Faye Tozer added.

As the group continued to chat about getting the audience involved in the dance numbers, Naga decided to throw Charlie under the bus with a quick jibe. “As for dance moves – I mean, Steps have always got you to do their dance moves on the sofa,” she said.

Charlie began to adamantly deny Naga’s accusation, but the band were having none of it: “We have! We have!” they chanted. H added: “Well everytime we come on, Charlie – you never play game, ever!” sending the sofa into hysterics, whilst Stayt was left red-faced.

Attempting to defend himself, Stayt chimed in: “I don’t think anyone wants to see that. I think it’s best left for the imagination.”

Clearly embarrassed by the spotlight being shone on him, Charlie swiftly tried to swing the conversation back onto the group, by asking them about their blue outfits. However, Naga was not so willing to let Charlie get away with his secret unwillingness to bust a move as the band continued to push him to try a move – however, Charlie was not budging and the interview soon moved on.

Later on in the interview, the band admitted that they were happy to try and dispel rumours of their music being vapid. Tozer said that people had often disregarded their music as “throwaway pop”, but insisted: “If you really listen to the lyrics of our songs, there’s generally a story and there’s a narrative that fits really well into the musical.

BBC Breakfast airs every day at 6am on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer.
