BBC Breakfast in presenter shake-up as Jon Kay ‘missing’ and replaced by co-star

BBC Breakfast fans woke up to a pleasant surprise at the start of this week when they spotted a regular presenter was notably missing from the famous red sofa.

On Monday (February 12) morning, TV presenter Jon Kay was nowhere to be seen. The 54-year-old broadcaster usually hosts the morning show with his co-star Sally Nugent from Monday to Wednesday.

But this week, the BBC show suffered a presenter shake-up when the broadcaster was forced to pull out of the show at the last minute. Instead, his colleague Ben Thompson, 43, stood in for him and hosted the show alongside the brunette beauty, 52.

Despite his absence, the show didn’t go off without a hitch as the dynamic duo discussed the biggest stories hitting the headlines. This included the dramatic rise of pet costs and the new governmental campaign to raise awareness of scams and fraud terrorising Brits across the country.

Although it’s not known why Jon was missing from the program today, the journalist recently joined the judging panel for this year’s BBC 500 words creative writing challenge. Taking to Instagram, the dad-of-three shared a snap with four of his star-studded colleagues as they narrowed down the top 50 finalists in the competition.

Joining him on the judging panel was a series of best-selling authors including Francesca Simon, Charlie Higson, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Sir Lenny Henry and Malorie Blackman. The group could be seen beaming side by side as they each held a book of entries.

He captioned the post: “A very special afternoon in London chairing the judging panel for this year’s #bbc500words competition. An absolute honour to help facilitate the deliberations of our best-selling author-judges: “Francesca Simon, Charlie Higson, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Sir Lenny Henry and Malorie Blackman.

“What a line-up. The children’s entries they had to choose from were EPIC. We have so many talented young writers in the UK. Mind-blowing. We received tens of thousands of entries. Find out the winners in some spectacular BBC programmes next month for #WorldBookDay.”

It comes after Sally Nugent was forced to tell Jon off last week when he was unable to contain his laughter as they introduced their latest guest. After Carol Kirkwood closed her weather segment, the camera panned back to the studio where the doting dad was clearly smirking as he glanced to his right.

Sally said: “Now he helped aspiring singers transform into their idols.” But it didn’t take long before her co-host burst into laughter as she urged: “Don’t laugh – it’s true!

“He presented Stars In Their Eyes for more than a decade and since then, Matthew Kelly has been acting on stage and screen.” TV veteran Matthew, 73, could then be seen laughing hysterically before giving Jon the thumbs up to indicate he was okay to continue, prompting Jon to chuckle harder.

Sally continued: “I think we should tell them what you’re actually laughing at.” Matthew, who aptly used to present Game For A Laugh, duly apologised: “I’m so sorry. I’ve just seen the picture [behind Jon and Sally] of me and Denise Welch. Oh look at that one. I love that woman – she’s great.”

BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One or catch-up on BBC iPlayer.
