Emotional Steve Wright tribute confirmed as BBC co-star steps in to present radio show

Steve Wright is set to be remembered by the BBC in a series of emotional tribute shows.

The broadcasting legend was found dead at his London flat on Monday (February 12) aged 69 and his shock death has left his friends, family and colleagues heartbroken.

His career as a radio DJ will be honoured across the weekend, with Liza Tarkbuck stepping in to present a special episode of Sunday Love Songs, paying tribute to the BBC Radio 2 stalwart and with dedications from his listeners.

A BBC spokesperson told the Mirror: “We’ve been remembering Steve on air all week together with our presenters and listeners, and we’ll continue to celebrate his decades with the BBC this weekend. On BBC Four, audiences can catch his first ever Top of the Pops from 1980, on BBC Sounds there’s a special collection and this weekend’s Pick of the Pops and Sunday Love Songs will be dedicated to Steve, presented by Gary Davies and Liza Tarbuck.”

The broadcaster has also confirmed a special commission celebrating Steve’s BBC career will be aired later this year. BBC Four will mark Steve Wright’s time hosting Top of the Pops with four episodes from the BBC archive on Friday (February 15), including his first and last shows from 1980 and 1989.

Over the weekend, Gary will present this Saturday’s Pick of the Pops, dedicated to Steve. Listeners will also hear Gary turning the clock back to 1980, the year when Steve joined BBC Radio 1, and 1996, when he joined BBC Radio 2.

A spokesperson for BBC Radio 2 said: “Steve was deeply loved by the Radio 2 family and listeners, and for almost three decades he hosted a raft of brilliant shows on the network enjoyed by millions. In addition to his past Saturday and Afternoon Shows, Steve’s Sunday Love Songs has been on air since 1996, and most recently. Steve also hosted the legendary Pick of the Pops on Saturdays, alongside a variety of specials on Radio 2, and Steve Wright: The Best of the Guests, Steve Wright’s Summer Nights and Steve Wright’s Love Songs Extra on BBC Sounds. We will miss him dearly.”

Tributes have poured in for Steve following the news of his shock death. Piers Morgan penned: “RIP Steve Wright, 69. One of Britain’s greatest ever radio broadcasters. A brilliantly creative, funny, warm, intelligent, hard-working & energetic man. Absolutely loved him, on and off air. So sad to hear this news. Thanks for all the wonderful entertainment, Steve.”
