Mel B was left with £700 to her name and shopped in Lidl after split from ‘abusive’ ex

Mel B has confessed she was left so broke following her split from her abusive ex-husband that she was forced to shop in Lidl and Costco.

The 48-year-old Spice Girl returned to Leeds in 2019 — a year after divorcing film producer, Stephen Belafonte. However, her ten-year marriage also left her drained of cash which led her to move back to her mother’s bungalow with her three children.

Talking about her previous money woes, Mel explained that people would assume she was rich due to the fact that she was a part of the biggest girl band in the world. But the singer confirmed that after her divorce, this unfortunately wasn’t the case.

She told The Sun: “I went from performing to thousands at Wembley on the Spice Girls’ 13-date Reunion Tour in 2019 to squeezing into my mum’s with my kids sleeping in bed with me. I didn’t expect that to happen in my 40s after a successful career but I had nowhere else to go.

Mel said was forced to “pick up the pieces following her marriage breakdown to the American-based star. She added: “Because I was so badly affected financially from my relationship, I had to pick up the pieces.”

When Melanie decided to walk out of her abusive ten-year marriage in 2017 she only had £700 left in the bank and still had a costly divorce and custody battles to fight. It took the hitmaker five years to save the money to move out of her mother’s home and she finally exchanged on a converted farmhouse in West Yorkshire earlier this month.

She also said that although she made a lot of money in the US, appearing on shows like America’s Got Talent and Dancing With The Stars, she lost control of her finances when married to Stephen.
