Dermot O’Leary slept through wife’s horror allergic reaction after drunk night out

Dermot O’Leary confessed he once fell asleep when his wife was having a serious allergic reaction.

The This Morning presenter is married to Dee Koppang, a film and television producer and director from Oslo, Norway. The TV exec has worked on a number of iconic shows over the years including Netflix ’s The Crown and Bridgerton.

She’s also previously worked on Big Brother and T4 on the Beach on the silver screen. It is understood the pair first met when they were both working for the same TV production company and were in a relationship for nine years before the 50-year-old got down on one knee.

The broadcaster popped the question during a lavish trip to New York back in 2011 with the happy couple tying the knot a year later at St Mary’s Church in Chiddingstone in September 2012 and they kept to a strict, small guestlist for occasion.

A few famous friends were in attendance including his co-host Holly Willoughby, Keith Lemon and James Cordon. The couple have now been married for almost 11 years, but it hasn’t always been plain sailing after The X Factor star once confessed he fell asleep while his wife was having a serious allergic reaction.

Appearing on the Dave comedy show Unforgiveable, hosted by former Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc, the broadcaster recalled how one drunken night out took a turn for the worst. He admitted: “I might have fallen asleep whilst my wife was suffering an allergic reaction to nuts… well it’s happened twice.

“I went to the loo and as I came back, I saw her shovelling peanuts into her mouth. She thought she was eating soybeans because she’s never eaten peanuts before so she had no idea what they tasted like.

“I go, ‘You’re eating peanuts!’ but I’m also quite p***ed and I’m also really tired. We go back to our hotel room and when you’ve got a severe nut allergy, what you should do if you don’t have your EpiPen, she says you should eat crackers and stuff.

“But don’t chew them very much so it kind of scrapes the poison down your throat. And I just start to nod off and then I just fall asleep sitting down in front of her as, to all intense and purposes, she’s suffering an anaphylactic shock.”

Thankfully, the brunette beauty made a full recovery but that didn’t stop his co-stars on the show from sharing their disappointment. Mel fumed: “I can’t believe you fell asleep” as the audience erupted into laughter.

The dad-of-one previously shared his ‘secret’ for his happy and ‘successful’ partnership. During a Q&A with fans, he said that it’s all about “slack and compromise.”

He explained: “No marriage is perfect. From the start we gave each other a lot of slack and compromised. This person’s your best friend. Try not to give them a hard time.

“It’s down to letting someone still have an active life individually. It’s about being there when you need to be there.” In June 2020, Dermot and Dee welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Kasper Koppang O’Leary.

The doting dad went on to say that one day Dee will share their journey to parenthood, but not until she is ready and the time is right. For now, the couple are enjoying time with their son and their two beloved cats, Socks and Toto.
