Inside Matt Lucas’ love life – dating apps, death and sex as a distraction

Matt Lucas has been a part of British comedy for decades, first shooting to public fame in the 90s with several stints on Reeves and Mortimer.

Since then, Matt has dominated TV, appearing on comedy shows including Little Britain, which debuted in 2003, and Come Fly with Me, which aired in 2011. As well as this, he also has taken on the role of presenting, taking on huge shows including The Great British Bake Off and currently the Fantasy Football League.

But away from the cameras, Matt’s life is shrouded in secrecy, as he is a notoriously private person. In addition to this, his love life has been barely discussed as he prefers to keep that side of himself away from public view.

So, as Matt celebrates his birthday, Daily Star looks inside Matt Lucas’ private love life.

Love and heartbreak

In the 2000s, comedian Lucas was open about his love his partner, Kevin McGee. The pair were inseparable and eventually tied the knot – entering into a civil partnership in 2006.

However, the romance – while intense – did not last for too much longer as 18 months after the couple were formally recognised, Matt and Kevin split in 2008. Things would go from bad to worse for Matt as his ex-partner McGee would tragically pass away just one year later in October of 2009.

Ten years on from his death, Matt paid tribute to his former lover with a touching post on Instagram. In the post, he gave fans an insight into their relationship and how the feelings never really went away for Matt, even after the pair split.

“I loved him more than anyone I’ve ever met, and still do,” he penned. “He was so funny and silly and clever and kind and handsome and his smile made my heart soar.

“In the end he lost his battle with addiction and depression – I guess some people don’t have the armour for this world,” he added. “I think of him probably a hundred times a day, every day. In truth, I think of little else.”

Using distractions

Following his split from his partner, Matt has remained notoriously quiet about his private life and in particular, his romantic ventures. However, in a rare glimpse into his love life, he admitted that after Kevin passed away, he found a number of ways to keep himself distracted from the grief.

In 2017, some eight years after Kevin’s death, Matt opened up to the Sunday Times about how his death affected him. He responded: “I think people respond in all different ways to grief, I thought I was very conscientious going to a bereavement counsellor and not turning to drink, which I hardly ever do — I probably have six units a year.

“But I ended up eating lots and having lots of sex; that’s how I responded,” he said. “As much as anything I was trying distract myself.”

Testing the waters

In January, it was reported that Matt Lucas was back on the dating scene once again. The calls came after several people had spotted Matt on dating app Tinder, which is used to find either a short-term fling or a long-term relationship.

Now aged 49, Matt’s profile was found by The Sun, and it showed that the comedian still was not sure what he was looking for. When asked in his bio what he was after, he put a confused emoji with the words, “Figuring it out”.

In one of a number of snaps he uploaded to his verified profile, Lucas was seen holding a cake with the word “Choclit”, a reference to his FatFighters character in Little Britain, Marjorie Dawes. His so-called ‘anthem’ was also put down as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by Tight Fit.

This is not the first time that he seen using the infamous dating app, however. In 2015, once again trying to put himself out there, he set up a profile and urged fans of his work to “say hello” and swipe right.
