Roxanne Pallett once opened up on a “dark” time in her life when she thought “there was no light at the end of the tunnel.”
The actress, 41, shot to fame playing Jo Stiles on Emmerdale – making her debut in 2005. For three years she was a regular on the soap and was nominated for several gongs.
And in 2008, Roxanne quit the soap and said her goodbyes to the famous Yorkshire village. Since her soap exit, she turned her hand to an array of different television and film projects.

But in 2016, Roxanne candidly confessed how she was left “deflated” after going a “year without work.” At the time she was starring in the theatre show Some Girls, playing Tyler.
Speaking on the British Theatre Guide Podcast, talking about her career, the host told her she “seems to be doing some big things.” Roxanne replied: “I feel like it’s the typical actor’s life. I went over a year with no work and it was pretty dark, it was really quiet time.
“And anyone, whether you’re actor or not, that’s been out of work for that amount of time knows you kind of lose a sense of purpose and your identity in a way.” Going on, Roxanne recalled the “dark” period in her life.
She explained: “I didn’t know what day it was and it was quite deflating to wake up and wait for the phone to ring. And it wasn’t that I was doing anything wrong it was just the nature of the beast.”
Roxanne added: “I think in life, you’ve just gotta roll with the punches and take the knocks.” Roxanne then said: “And the hardest bit about being an actor in my opinion, is waiting for the phone to ring.
“It’s the quiet times and it can be six weeks, six months it can be years, and it’s about holding on and staying focused and staying strong.”
Roxanne then went on to say how she thought it’s “really important” that people in the public eye share both sides of the story when it comes to their careers. She explained: “I mean, this time last year I thought there was no light at the end of the tunnel.
“Six months felt like a year, then it got a year that felt like ten years. You start losing a sense of reality, I didn’t know what day it was because every day felt like a Sunday.”
She added: “And all you’re friends are off doing their own thing, and you do, you drop off the radar a bit, and then people then forget to text you back, you suddenly stop getting invited to things.”
Roxanne found herself embroiled in a scandal during her 2018 Celebrity Big Brother stint. The former soap star’s career was left in ruins after she wrongly accused fellow housemate Ryan Thomas of punching her on the Channel 5 show.
Roxanne didn’t want to sleep in the same room as Coronation Street star Ryan, claiming she was afraid he might harm her. However, security footage showed no assault took place, revealing that Roxanne was distorting the truth about Ryan.
Big Brother viewers turned against Roxanne, but Ryan was unaware of public opinion as he was cut off from the outside world. He was often seen crying in the house and only found comfort when the public started chanting “Get Roxanne out! ” on eviction night.
Roxanne’s actions resulted in over 25,000 Ofcom complaints. She later apologised on air, admitting she made a “terrible mistake” during a tense interview with then Big Brother host Emma Willis.
