Pop legend Gabrielle says brain condition makes her ‘forget to sing in the microphone’

Dreams singer-songwriter Gabrielle has been performing her pop hits for more than 30 years.

But now 54, the star joked how she now forgets to sing into her microphone while on stage due to menopausal brain fog.

Chatting exclusively to the Daily Star, she said: “I still can’t believe I’m lucky enough to be doing what I love for over 30 years. It’s been 31 years since Dreams and I’m still living out my dream of making new music and performing my songs on stage.

“The only difference now is I keep singing into my fan by mistake because I get so hot on stage due to the menopause. I’ll be performing and I forget I am holding a fan to keep me cool and I start singing into it thinking it’s the microphone.

“I’ve made peace that that is what menopause can do to you. I didn’t realise it was such a taboo subject until I started talking about it during my shows.

“I’m a chatterbox. Gabby by name, gobby by nature. It’s a fact of life and nothing to be ashamed of.”

Gabrielle burst onto the pop scene in 1993 with her huge number one single Dreams.

The singer-songwriter went on to become one of the UK’s most successful female solo artists of all time thanks to hits including Rise and Out Of Reach.

The two-time BRIT Award winner semi-retired 15-years ago to focus on bringing up her two children as a single mum.

A successful stint on The Masked Singer in 2021 helped introduce Gabrielle to a whole new audience.

She is now back with a brand new album and enjoying a huge career renaissance – announcing her first arena tour dates in 22-years. The Ivor Novello Award winner said: “This does feel like a second chance at my career.

“Performing at the 02 and in arenas again after all this time is a professional dream coming true. You could call it a renaissance.

“I did 32 shows last year and this year looks to be even busier. My priority 15 years ago was very much my children and being a good parent.

“But now it is about pleasing myself and having fun. I no longer have to rush back for the school run or worry about embarrassing my kids at school.

“I am allowed to be myself now with less worries. I feel like I can enjoy the magic of what being on stage does to me again, emotionally and spiritually.”

Gabrielle releases her eighth studio album, Place In Your Heart, on May 10.

She is currently performing more shows than at any other time in her illustrious career. And she was personally requested to open up for superstar Adele, at last year’s BST Hyde Park gigs.

Gabrielle added: “I would love to have a career like Sir Elton John and continue performing into my seventies. That’s how I look at my career now.

“While people still want to come see me on stage I still want to be on stage singing.

“I am in my fifties now and happier than ever. I feel like if I don’t learn to love and accept myself now I never will.

“I am now a mum, a grandma and I am doing exactly what I love to do. I am blessed.”

Tickets for Gabrielle’s 2025 nationwide tour, including London’s O2 and Manchester Arena are on sale now.
