Oscars 2024 fans floored after ‘awkward’ and ‘chaotic’ Al Pacino blunder

Oppenheimer may have taken home a historic win at The Oscars, but Al Pacino stole the show.

Christopher Nolan’s flick Oppenheimer scooped up the Best Picture at the 96th Oscars. But it was Al Pacino’s odd way of announcing the winner that had everyone talking.

Al Pacino skipped mentioning the other movies in the running and went straight for the envelope, saying: “Best Picture…uh, I have to go to the envelope for that. And I will. Here it comes. And my eyes see Oppenheimer? ” Emma Thomas and Nolan hopped on stage to grab the award and shared a touching thank you talk.

Chatter about Pacino’s odd style filled X, the place we used to call Twitter. One fan wrote: “I’m obsessed with the way Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as Best Picture. couldn’t have been more chaotic or confusing lol.”

Someone else said: “Did a crappy job! Did not even introduce the nominees.”, reports the Mirror.

And another added: “That was so awkward lmaoooo.”

In his victory speech, Nolan mentioned: “Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.”

He wrapped up by giving a big thanks to his supporters, especially his wife Emma who produced the film.

Al Pacino’s blunder wasn’t the only jaw-dropping moment of the night, as fans and Emma Stone were stunned when she bagged the Best Actress gong. She scooped her second Oscar for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things.

Emma’s victory was slightly overshadowed by a wardrobe malfunction. She quipped as she reached the stage: “My dress is broken, I think it happened during I’m Just Ken.”

The Ryan Gosling-led Barbie song was nominated for Best Original Song, but the award went to What Was I Made For?

by Billie Eilish from the same film. Ryan’s performance of the track at the ceremony sent social media into meltdown as he teamed up with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

While Emma triumphed in the Best Actress category, Cillian Murphy was crowned Best Actor for his portrayal of J Robert Oppenheimer in the biopic Oppenheimer. He paid tribute to Christopher Nolan in his speech, saying: “It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on over the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say.”

He added: “Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member, on Oppenheimer; you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly.”

John Cena, the wrestler turned actor, caused quite a stir at the Oscars when he presented the award for Best Costume Design in his birthday suit. He managed to keep things PG by using the winner’s envelope to cover his modesty.

The biggest prize of the night, the Best Picture award, was up for grabs at the Oscars. This is a huge honour as it’s given to the film that the academy’s voters think was the best in 2023.

Barbenheimer was once again in the running for this award, after both films had a successful opening weekend and became two of the biggest hits of the year.

Other films that were nominated included Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest. For the first time ever, three of the films were directed by women – Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, and Past Lives.
